When I look at the preferred networks, there is a list of all the networks.
Usually (automatic) is at the end.  Once in a while (manual) appears.  How
does one change that back to (automatic)?

In the list of preferred networks, click the network that you want to
change, click the Properties Button, click the Connections tab, and
put a check mark in the box "Connect when this network is in range".
