Joining a domainI would like to join a domain, but I am concerned that it will create a new
profile on my machine. My name in the domain is different than my name on the computer; I can't change my login name on the domain, and do not want to change my login name on the computer. Hi Maggie,
When you join your computer to the domain and logon using your domain account a new profile will be created. You can then just logoff and logon using the local administrator account and copy the files from the old profile to the new one. Here is an article describing how to do it: How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151 Regards, Anton Pegan Show quoteHide quote "Maggie" <Mag***@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:3CB94362-192A-4432-B924-2D4DA7FC5F2D@microsoft.com... >I would like to join a domain, but I am concerned that it will create a new > profile on my machine. I would like to stress that I do not want to change my login name on the
computer; furthermore I do not want the extra profile. Is there any way for me to access servers in the domain without having the new profile? him, which I did before I posted here. Most of the servers here are Netware, which I can access (with some inconvenience) without having to install the beastly official Novell client without having to add an extra profile to my machine. There *has* to be a way to do this -- I mean, what if I was using Linux or MacOs or some other non-microsoft OS? Or would I just be completely prevented from accessing the servers in the domain? Can you tell me how to go about that? I'm comfortable enough
with "net use" (which is how I log on to the various netware servers), but cannot figure out how to apply it to servers in the domain. Thanks. It's very similar to the way you use "net use" with a Netware server. You
will have to specify a domain username and password that has permission to access the shares. net use z: \\servername\share password /user:Domain\UserName Try looking in Help and Support for net use or at a cmd prompt type net use /? Hi Maggie,
Using a domain environment has other functionalities, which cannot be performed if you and your computer are not authenticated by the DC. If your only problem is accessing network shares then you can just map a network driver (My computer/Tools/Map network driver) or use the "net use" command (as Kerry suggested). The net use worked perfectly after I added the
server's ip address into ZoneAlarm's "trusted sites." All I need from the domain is access to a couple of machines. My printing comes via IP from a Novell print server.
