can't reconnect to internet on laptop without shutting down

If I connect and then disconnect I can't reconnect without shutting down the
computer. AND sometimes it disconnects in the middle of getting email and
then I also have to shutdown before I can reconnect.

I have a Gateway laptop with WinXP Home, dial-up connection. THe ISP says
it's because my daughter set up AOL instant messaging on my computer. They
took off a whole bunch of stuff but then said that the disconnect "just
happens sometimes".

How is the computer protected?  Is the Windows Firewall enabled, and properly
configured?  Is the computer properly patched?  I'd start with a good malware
check, and don't stop without a HijackThis scan, and proper expert advice.

And the prior presence of AOL IM is a red flag, but it's just a symptom of what
else you may find.  Be persistent here.

Thanks, I suspected a possible malware problem. I'll check out your
suggestions.  callie
