can't reconnect to internet on laptop without shutting downIf I connect and then disconnect I can't reconnect without shutting down the
computer. AND sometimes it disconnects in the middle of getting email and then I also have to shutdown before I can reconnect. I have a Gateway laptop with WinXP Home, dial-up connection. THe ISP says it's because my daughter set up AOL instant messaging on my computer. They took off a whole bunch of stuff but then said that the disconnect "just happens sometimes". Is the computer properly patched? I'd start with a good malware check, and don't stop without a HijackThis scan, and proper expert advice. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/dealing-with-malware-adware-spyware.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/dealing-with-malware-adware-spyware.html And the prior presence of AOL IM is a red flag, but it's just a symptom of what else you may find. Be persistent here. -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience. My email is AT DOT actual address pchuck mvps org. Thanks, I suspected a possible malware problem. I'll check out your
