Cannot obtain IP automaticallyI am also unable to get IP through DHCP. I am not getting a 169 address. I
just get 0.0.0.0. I have reinstalled windows and my on board network card, updated drivers, and installed a new network card and still nothing. I have checked and changed security settings and switched off my firewall. Everyone else on the network is ok but not me... I have even tried a wifi network card to see if this helped. Nothing... I have upto date virus and spyware protection that was also reinstalled. I just can not find the issue. I can statically ip my machine (which is what I have to do now). but it just stopped working yesterday and i have not been able to sort this out. Any ideas greatly appreciated charlieb1979 wrote:

One of
them serving other as a Internet Gateway, which is the main Computer, who is assigning IP addresses to all other 6 computers. In Windows XP, setting up Networking is to easy. What I always do is on every computer is: 1. Opening My Network Places 2. Running "Setup a Home or Small Office Network" on every computer and giving the answer. 3. Setting up one computer as Internet Gateway and rest access Internet from "Network". 4. Rest the well everything Windows XP does. 5. It automatically assign the IP of the Gateway to 192.168.0.1 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0. 6. Other computer "automatically" use 192.168.0.1 as Gateway and assign themselves a proper IP like 192.168.0.25 and so on. Sometime the problem occurs as mention by you only if: 1. I previously assign a IP to any machine instead of Automatic IP address. 2. There is a problem in Network wire. That is all. So, I will suggest you that if you have Windows XP installed on your machines then run the "Network Setup Wizard" instead of doing everything manually. Just set the IP of client machines to Automatic. Do not assign IP or Gateway to them. Hope this information helps you, let us know.
