is it easier with a router

hi people had a chap set up network two d/tops & 1 laptop.

n1 d/top hooked up via modem using usb cable.

n1 to n2 d/top hooked together via crossover cable cat6.

laptop hooks up via cat6 cable directly from modem.

im very lost, is it easier to buy a router,
what type do i need,how many ports, brand,  etc.
posted a question the other day and recieved answer from chuck but was over
my head as i didnt set up network.

Yes. Easier, and more secure.

You need a router with at least two Ethernet ports. A 4-port one should do.

If your laptop has built in wireless capability, a wireless broadband router
would be a good idea.. a website for you to look over..
