I am runing Windows XP Pro SP2.  I have a NIC that if set to automatically
detect network speed or to run at 100 Mbps constantly tells me that I have a
network cable unplugged.  If I set it to run at 10 Mbps half or full duplex
it works fine.  I have tried replacing the UTP cable and the port on the
router to no avail.  I have also replaced the NIC with a new one and still
have the same problem.  All of the other computers on the network have no
problem with connecting at full speed.  I have had this problem before with
this same computer and set it to run at 10 Mbps and left it alone but I have
since done a full reinstall of Windows and the problem resurfaced.   Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

This is not likely to be a Windows issue. What sort of switch / hub do you
connect to? Have you tried another cable? another switch port?

That is indeed odd. I really can't see how this would be OS related, esp as
you've tried a new NIC - I'm not sure what I'd try, honestly....sorry I
couldn't help more. You might check out

.....someone said they had this problem & it turned out to be a flaky power
supply....or a video card that was acting wonky.

Googling for
"windows xp" "network cable is unplugged" autosense NIC

got a bunch of hits, and you might try looking there.
