Access to another computer a router

I have a home network behind a router/firewall. My son,who lives in another
state also has a home network (with the same workgroup name as my network)
behind a router/firewall. Is it possible that we could access each others
home network to share files and/of printers?

Thanks Robert,
After I posted the original message I thought of a VPN and started
researching it. I have a general knowledge of networking. but it is not my
strong suit by any means. Could you reccomend a good bool that might help?
