Possibly because all machines are running XP Home with file/printer
sharing enabled. XP Home authenticates as Guest. This has nothing to do
with the Guest user account you see in the User Accounts applet. The
Guest account there allows anyone without an account on the system to
log on locally. It runs with elevated privileges and that is why it is
normally disabled.

A Workgroup is simply a cosmetic/organizational device; unlike a domain,
it provides no security.

I wrote xpp. (XP Pro).

I know about networking. But I always understood that with an xpp workgroup
users needed to have passwords and each user needed to be represented on each
machine. Correct so far? On this particular workgroup there are no passwords,
no users represnted on each machine.

Please read the post first, then answer.

I didn't realize that "xp p" meant XP Pro. This is one of the reasons
why using complete sentences, proper punctuation and capitalization,
and avoiding "chat speak" is a good idea when posting to Usenet. You
need to communicate to others - others do not need to guess at your
meaning.

Your understanding is incomplete. If Simple Sharing is enabled on XP Pro
machines, they will act like XP Home by authenticating as guest. If you
wish to have the users authenticate with username/password, disable
Simple Sharing on the machines. You will find this setting in Folder
Options>View.
