Setting up a wireless networkHi,
My PC is connected to the internet through an ADSL Modem. Now I would llike my PC to act as a server in my house and to have 3 laptops connected to that same connection via a wireless routeur connected to my PC via a network cable. How should I configure the routeur ? Should it assign IP's to the laptops using DHCP ? Or should I assign static IP's to the laptops ? What gateway should I use ?I'm a bit confuse as you can see as how to setup my network.... Can you help ? Thanks Connect the modem to the WAN/Internet port on the router and connect the PC
to a LAN port on the router. Normally I recommend use of static IPs on small networks, but most laptops are either sometimes or frequently connected to different networks. So DHCP is makes better sense for them. Most routers come with DHCP enabled by default and this will assign the router's IP as the default gateway. I didn't get that part: Connect the modem to the WAN/Internet port on the router How can I connect my modem to the router ?? It's a USB modem. Doesn't it make more sense to connect the modem to my PC and then my PC to the routeur via LAN ? Can you let me know please ? make such devices without including an ethernet port. I suggest you either demand that your ISP replace it or replace it yourself with a compatible ethernet capable device. If you have to keep your existing modem, then you could enable ICS on the desktop, turn off DHCP on the router, change the router's IP to 192.168.0.254, and connect the desktop by ethernet cable to a LAN port on the router.
