Don't have permission after re-enabling guest account? The problem is that computer A can see B but "does not have permission." Computer B can see and connect to A just fine. Maybe this is only bizarre to me, but the solution to the problem involved changing the settings for the guest account on computer A. I had to change a couple of settings so that there was no password and all the appropriate permissions. Circumstances arose, and I had to set a password on my computer. Likewise I had to disable the guest account. Later, those circumstances subsided, and I re-enabled the guest account and removed the admin password. Now, I am back to the problem mentioned above. Keep in mind that the only change has been the disabling and re-enabling of the guest account which I believe resets all the changes that were made to the guest account (permissions and all that). I think there are 2 or 3 places that I had to go and adjust settings for this. Can someone help me with that? I'm going to include the ipconfig below for what its worth, but none of that really matters with the problem that I have. i'll post the browse thing in a bit. I am using simple file sharing. I have Guest activated (via net user). I made sure that neither one has a password, I think. My account doesnt have a password, but I don't know if the Guest account does. I don't have the option of resetting my password and when I go to reset the Guest password, I leave it blank and hit <enter>. The reset password always appears for the Guest. I exxpect this is because the option "users must enter a user name and passsword to use this computer" is checked. Should reset password appear for mine as well? Should I put a space or something in the password fields? My restrictanonymous is set to 0. I ahve everyone in my guest authentication list, and not guest. Finally, The error message that I get when trying to connect to the other computer is "\\Gir\shareddocs is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact admin... Access is denied." perhaps needlessly I will repeat the other information. Gir can connect to me fine. I cannot connect to it. And this was following the disabling and renabling of guest as well as the adding and then removal of a main password. Thanks again. My email is AT DOT actual address pchuck mvps org. I'm not sure I understand the limitations of guest access. First, because
everything was shared fine before I decided to put a password on my system, I don't see how it can be a limitation. Second, its C;\documents and settings\all users\documents, so its not a special folder or anything. I know you are just trying to cover all bases. I checked your link this time. I don't know how I missed the restrictnullSessaccess when searching through all this yesterday before making the original post. I don't seem to have a registry for that. As in, I do not have a registry called 'restrictnullsessaccess' in HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\lanmanserver\parameters. Should I? or is this only a problem if I have it and its set to 1? Ok.. problem with the ACL stuff... I've been lost for quite sometime, only to find out that I don't have the tab that I keep being referred to. If I right click a folder, and click sharing and security, I have a 'General' tab, a 'Sharing' tab, and a 'customize' tab. So, I'm not able to access this security tab. Is there another way to get to it because I can't seem to follow how. Also, the more I read about this, the more it sounds like this is something that should be done on the other computer (Gir) and not mine because its related to specific shared folders. Is there a way to access that ntfs permissions without going to a specific folder? Ok, I read the thing about disabling simple file sharing. And again this seems relevent only to the other computer (Gir). I will try it anyway and post back in a bit, but I don't hold out hope. To re-iterate, the problem (originally, before I got professional help) was the same as now, in that GIR can access TECHNOMANCER but not the other way. The problem was on TECHNOMANCER and it involved access and permissions relating to the creation of a guest account for GIR to access (despite the fact that GIR already worked). Apparently, TECHNOMANCER would not read from GIR without recognizing GIR has having an account, even though it let GIR leech from me left and right. I don't intend to sound patronizing. I just want to stress that some of these solutions (which I may be entirely misreading) seem to focus on the other computer (GIR) and not mine. Am I misreading your extremely descriptive links? I'll recheck some permissions again.. Thanks for taking your time with me.. On Tue, 7 Nov 2006 15:19:01 -0800, Rev <R**@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote:

I've tried two things on the password. First, I went into user accounts and set a password and then removed it. For guest, I used the 'user passwords2' to reset the guest account, left them blank and clicked ok. Next time, I tried putting a space in each spot for both paswords. this also failed and actually made it so that neither computer could talk to each other. I tried this again with test in both places. This also failed and resulted in neither computer being able to talk to each other. Finally I went back and did remove password on everything so that everything does not require a password. I went back and checked the restrictnullsessaccess, deny access to..., access computer from..., made sure guest account was on, simple file sharing on, tcp/ip, etc. Both computers have all of the same settings. I'm trying everything that you ask, and will continue as long as you try to help me. This is a difficult problem, it took me almost 2 months to find someone that could fix it. When Carey Holzman fixed this, he resolved an issue on TECHNOMANCER that prevented it from talking to GIR despite GIR being able to grab files from TECHNOMANCER. Thanks again. And if the nForce is involved, that's surely a candidate for the problem. Are both nForces the same hardware model? Are they running the same driver versions? Long story short, I had to reinstall all my nforce drivers and whatnot to get my ethernet working again. I also had to reset my router. In doing so, I'm now seeing that whereas before the browstat was fine for both computers (see post numbers 2 and 3 at the top) they are now a bit different showing my pc (technomancer) not to be listed as a backup server. We don't know what the problem is. Whenever you make any change to either computer - re install a driver or tweak a setting - you may affect the network. The diagnostics are there to help us figure out where the problem is. If you make any changes, any one of the previous diagnostics may change. Make it easy on us both. When you make any changes, rerun all 4 tests x 2 computers, and post all 8 logs, as updated. Don't guess at what you think has changed - let's look at all of it. And when you read an article about the problem, ask questions before deleting drivers that you're not supposed to. Please. -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience. I went back through everything (the ACls and all that). so the only thing that has changed is in those logs. None of the settings you ahve previously asked me to check have changed. The problem is still the same as before, except that now my browstat log is different. Perhaps this may lead to some other problem later on, I don't know. But, I was clear about what exactly has changed and what has been done, so that I can be as helpful as possible for you. I appreciate your help. And if you admit that you don't know everything about the computer, maybe an updated "ipconfig /all" too. There are several other diagnostic procedures that I have in mind, depending upon what we see in "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all". ALL 8 of the things you asekd for and they are what they currently are... It was late last night when I posted that but I have a pretty good idea of why my browstat changed. BUT I will ask before I change something.. ok. when I reinstalled everything it put me back on a dynamic ip. Technomancer has stff that requires a static ip address to work effectively, so I went in to change it. However, it kept teling me that the ip address that I was trying to assign was already assigned to my ethernet adapter. Which really didnt make sense because, it wasnt assigned to any computer on my network. I reset my router around this time because when I made it set my ip address to that anyway, I could no longer talk to my router. Long story short, I got all of that fixed and I got all of my settings back to what they were (at least everything that has been part of the conversation since the beginning). My idea is that by setting it to that ip address, One of the times it said that I might not be recognized if the other ethernet adapter every tried to connect. I didnt care about that at the time because I felt like there was no way I had to worry about myself connecting while myself was connected. HAHA. That was probably my error. Granted. It is all points back to me, so maybe that's why everything is working the way it was?!? My question is: can I go in and change my static ip address so that it is not EXACTLY the same as it was before, so that we don't have this potential conflict. Since, my naivety leads me to believe that that is why Im not showing up in browstat despite being accessed fine by the other computer. All I ask is that you rerun everything at the same time, and present everything together. You say above The problem is still the same as before, except that now my browstat log is different. That difference may be a key. Sometimes, we overlook the smallest detail which is essential to the diagnosis. You do want this fixed? Make sure that we have complete, up to date diagnostic data, at all times. And don't go making any changes, like accidentally deleting a driver that you weren't supposed to. Carey (now there is a name from the past) had a cookbook of treatments, and he would apply each one, each time a problem was presented. My email is AT DOT actual address pchuck mvps org. Haha. Yeah. It was an effective method for fixing my problem in 17 minutes
(well if you take into account that that was over the phone after 2 weeks of nothing over the net). However, it left me sitting here like I am now having to go back through all of this again because I have no idea how it worked. Just to be clear, my network was running perfect for what would have been 3 yrs this december. What caused it to fail is that TECHNOMANCER disabled the guest account, and set a password on the admin account. This killed the network. Which at the time, was part of my motivation. The other part being no other users on my pc directly either. The problem was that turning guest back on and removing the password from the admin account was no sufficient to restore things back to ye glory days of olde. Which I knew was going to be the case, when I killed the network, but didnt really care at that time. Ah, the joy of emotions on rationale. That should have been the only problem, though now I think I made the whole thing somewhat moot. I mean I did have to reinstall drivers and everything after reading a bad post about nforce stuff. I don't think its completely moot however in the sense that this problem is the problem that I've always had. Its what I have from the initial boot after a reformat. Its the same problem that Carey had to fix. Though, my stupidity probably cause NEW problems in addition to the one I have (that are yet undiscovered), I think the journey itself will be fruitful enough. now that my digression is done. I switched back to a dynamic ip on technomancer. After we get everything working I can go back to a static one. Everything else can just wait. Looking at the logs from "browstat status", you now have a normal network. Both computers see each other ("There are 2 servers in domain IRKEN-NETWORK"), and both accept the same master browser TECHNOMANCER. Gir is getting an access denied when trying to access the registry on TECHNOMANCER, normal for Guest access. So let's enumerate the current symptoms, methodically. Take the following code (everything INSIDE the "#####" lines). Please DO NOT include ANY portion of the "#####" lines. (Please verify computer names and ip addresses). 1. Open Notepad. 2. Highlight then Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and Paste (Ctrl-V) into Notepad. 3. Examine the contents of Notepad. Is the text, as copied, readable (similar in format to the Base Code)? It won't run well, if it's not easily readable. 4. If the text is not easily read, then: * Stretch the sides of the window. If this improves things, then continue with Step 5. * Close Notepad, as is (do not bother to save anything). * Open Notepad. * Under Format, change the setting for Word Wrap. If it is unchecked, check it. If checked, uncheck it. * Return to Step 2. 5. Verify, and correct, names and addresses if necessary. 6. Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root folder "C:\". 7. Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag". 8. Wait patiently. 9. When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and ensure that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post. Do this from both computers, please, with both computers powered up and online. ##### Start CDiag Assembled Code @echo off set FullTarget1=TECHNOMANCER 192.168.0.102 set FullTarget2=gir 192.168.0.101 set FullTarget3= set FullTarget4= set FullTargets=%FullTarget1% %FullTarget2% %FullTarget3% %FullTarget4% set FullTargets=%FullTargets% 127.0.0.1 set PingTargets=www.yahoo.com 66.94.230.32 192.168.0.1 Set Version=V1.40 @echo CDiagnosis %Version% >c:\cdiag.txt @echo Start diagnosis for %computername% >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo Full Targets %FullTargets% >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo Ping Targets %PingTargets% >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo Over All Analysis >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo Enumerate Shares >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt net share >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo Adhoc Browser View >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt net view >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo Full Targets Analysis %FullTargets% >>c:\cdiag.txt for %%a in (%FullTargets%) do ( @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo Target %%a >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo "%computername% ping %%a" >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt ping %%a >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo "%computername% net view %%a" >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt net view %%a >>c:\cdiag.txt ) @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo Ping Targets Analysis %PingTargets% >>c:\cdiag.txt for %%a in (%PingTargets%) do ( @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo Target %%a >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo "%computername% ping %%a" >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt ping %%a >>c:\cdiag.txt ) @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo End diagnosis for %computername% >>c:\cdiag.txt notepad c:\cdiag.txt :EOF ##### End CDiag Assembled Code-- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience. I hope you can find something useful in all that. I had a ton of people give up on it last time. needless to say, my computer is called black death for a reason. Its incurable. haha. Checked the sharing permissions for each shared folder, and everyone has at least read permission. restrictanonymous = 0 do not have a restrictnullsessaccess registry computer crashes when I try to download the windows patch as outlined on the site. I don't know if this computer actually downloaded the bad update that potentially causes the problem. I know you say that xp pro works requires passwords. This isnt true. When our network was working we had blank passwords, and it is through setting a nonblank password that we run into more problems than what we have. Chuck,
I seem to have found something. I going to go back over both computers and your site again. Apparently, something I did when checking these things has triggered me the ability to access some but not all shared folders. I just tested it before I posted things from technomancer. I'm a bit confused because some folders appear that are not shared by either computer. I've tried using F5 to refresh and it doesnt work. Is there a way to get my network to clear off old folders that are no longer shared by either computer? GIR only lists currently shared folders while technomancer shows all folders (currently shared and no longer shared). On Tue, 14 Nov 2006 08:16:02 -0800, Rev <R**@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote:

If the latter, then you have to delete them. If the former, then you have to wait. The computer browser produces a cache, that isn't updated immediately. If they were put there by the browser, and you want to get rid of them sooner, you could power both computers off. Power Gir back on (it's the master browser), and let its desktop come up. Then power Technomancer up. Then rerun "browstat status" on both computers to verify browser status. -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience.
