Network Permissions in Windows 2000 Prothe wrong group. In addition to that I do not fully understand or speak web lingo, so please speak to me as I am an 8 year old! Here is as much information as I can give knowing the small amount I do about networking. I work for a small company and we have a network of 5 computers plus our server. Our server plus 2 computers run Windows 2000 Pro, 2 run Windows XP, and one runs Windows 98 (eek!). My first order of business is to try and understand "permissions", without having to take all of your time... is there any good links for people like me (who don't understand much of what I am talking about) that clearly state how to work with and define permissions? Second; I know that networking with a machine running 98 is not the easiest thing to do. I am trying to restrict that specific machine from running the Internet, which is hard enough in itself, and from having access to everything on the server, with the exception of a few folders that I would like to choose (possibly password protected? OR permission restricted?) Ideally, for backing up purposes, I'd like to be able to keep that computer connected to the network. So... all in all, my areas of trouble are: permissions and understand them (without having to take a 5 day course), disabling the Internet on a machine running 98, and password protecting or permission restricting folders on the 98 machine. Links are very helpful as long as I can understand them... I hope this all makes sense, and thank you in advance for taking the time to read and hopefully help me!! feel free to ask any questions, I will answer the best I can. No one can help?!

> No one can help?! That is the nature of Usenet support - sometimes you get lucky and getan answer and sometimes you don't. See my comments inline (have done some snipping): >> I work for a small company and we have a network of 5 computers plus Unfortunately (for you), learning about permissions and security and>> our server. Our server plus 2 computers run Windows 2000 Pro, 2 run >> Windows XP, and one runs Windows 98 (eek!). networking is not a quick thing. Taking a 5-day course won't even do it. However, the best place to start to learn about best practices, how to set up permissions, users, etc. in Microsoft operating systems is at MS TechNet. Go to the TechNet site and you will find guides to best practices, security, understanding permissions, and everything you require to set up your server and network securely. >> Second; I know that networking with a machine running 98 is not the There is no problem in networking a Win98 box but securing it will be>> easiest thing to do. I am trying to restrict that specific machine >> from running the Internet, which is hard enough in itself, and from >> having access to everything on the server, with the exception of a >> few folders that I would like to choose (possibly password protected? >> OR >> permission restricted?) Ideally, for backing up purposes, I'd like >> to be able to keep that computer connected to the network. next to impossible. Keeping it restricted to the intranet and off the Internet will be your best course of action. NT-based operating systems (NT, Win2k, Server 2k/2003) do not use password protection on folders to set permissions and restrictions. They use a combination of user accounts, groups, and Group Policies. You will find all of the details at TechNet. Depending on how you like to learn, books are also very useful. The Resource Kit books put out by MS Press are excellent. And finally, since you are wise enough to know that you need to keep your business secure and wise enough to know that you don't yet know how to do it, it would perhaps be a good idea to hire an outside professional to come and set everything up right. If you work beside the person and take notes, it will be a good apprenticeship and your business will also be set up the way it should be, including a backup and disaster recovery strategy. Yes, this costs money but it is a cost of doing business. The cost will be very much greater if you set things up wrong and your server is compromised and/or your data is lost. Malke
