Print serversI have one printer that I want to connect to a network. From a previous
[post I understand I do this with a print server. However from looking at the cheaper print servers they don't appear to handle bidirectional facilities. Can anyone recommend a print server that handles bidirectional printing and therefore allows ink level management etc? Thanks Tony Tony:
I'm in the same boat as you. I looked into it, and the "print servers' out there won't work with my HP laserjet series 1000, nor the low end ones bi-directional. Since I go thru one printer every few years, I'm keeping one PC on the home network on as a "file and print" server, as files are saved to it, and backed up form here. So, the I got one PC on all the time acting as my print server. Right now, when I print off the laser in the study, either from the living room PC, or from the laptop in the bedroom, I could hear my APC UPS starts beeping saying too much wattage is being used, as I got the printer hooked to the UPS. While the UPS beep signal is not meant to be used as such, I could hear that whatever I needed is being printed, and if I don't hear anything, its's jammed or out of paper. With this beeping, I don't need anything bi-directional right now. Long term, I'm looking at "network printers", and I see Dell has a low end color laser network printer going for $299.00. In conjunction with this, I've been reviewing "network storage". At that point, why spend money on a printer and an expensive print server??? I haven't seen too many complaints on network printers, and would like to hear what others may have to say as I might be in the market for one shortly. be a way round my problem as it gives me the option of using it as a back up device too.
