Accessing networked Desktop

My problem is slightly different to others i have read...
I have a laptop running XP Pro connected wirelessly to a router. I also have
a desktop running XP Home SP2 connected via ethernet to the same router.
Neither computer has trouble connecting to the internet.
The desktop can access shared files on the laptop but the laptop turns up an
error about not being able to find the network path. It does not recognise
any shared folders except its own. Both computers are running ZoneAlarm Pro
and have the same settings. They are both setup to allow the other's IP
address.
As far as I can tell they have the same settings but one can access
everything but the laptop cannot.
Please help, its extremely frustrating!

the desktop, is file and printer sharing enabled in internet properties?can
you ping the desktop from the laptop? has this suddenly started or did ik
work o.k. before and what is the error message?
