propagating share settings to child folders

I've set a folder to be shared.  I want the child folders to also inherit the
share settings of the parent. I right click on the parent and select sharing
and security-security-advanced-and check "replace permission entries on all
child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects". However,
when I click OK, or apply, nothing happens to the child folders and when I go
back into this screen that checkbox is then cleared.  The settings aren't
propagated to the child folders. How do I do this correctly?

do you have sharing enabled in Explorer | Tools | View.

"Use simple file sharing (recommended)" is not checked.  I'm not sure if
that's what you mean.

check it and see if it makes a difference.
might want to uncheck the sharing under firewall.
