Problem login to LAN serverI have a laptop on an ethernet LAN. Laptop has been setup for many months
with 2 admin users who can Connect to a file server on the LAN by opening the share on the Local Network, entering their user name and password, and accessing files. Now I've created a new user on this laptop; she also can see the shares on the LAN, but when I Open a share and enter her username and password, the Connect to... window redraws with the name of the computer inserted before her username (i.e., BERT\joanna) and the share won't open. There is no error message or alert, just the redrawn Connect to... window. I don't understand why the computer name is being inserted into the user name field, and if this is causing the failure to open the share. This behavior does not happen if I enter an older user's name and password (e.g., either of the 2 users who have used this laptop in the past; they can log-in to the LAN server with no problem). I've successfully logged-in to the LAN server using a Mac laptop and the same user's username and password. I can also successfully log-in to the server locally with the user's username and password, so I don't think username and password are non-functional otherwise...just on this XP Pro SP2 laptop. Idea/s? 'server' computer to match what is used on the clients. Do you have a user called Joanna on the file server, with a password that matches Joanna's on *her* computer? Create one....and see whether the problem recurs.

I've successfully logged-in over the LAN to her server account using a Mac laptop and logged-in to her account locally, on the server itself, using the very same username and password. This is why I believe the username/password are functional on the file server. I've been entering the same username and password v-e-r-y c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y on the laptop. I can be logged-in as her on her XP laptop, and mount the LAN share using _my_ username and password, but when I try to mount the LAN share as Joanna, the Connect to... window redraws with the computer name and a backslash inserted before her username, over and over and over again. Permissions were all good (771) for my purpose, but the server needed to be told which users in the group are allowed to connect by Samba and the new user's account wasn't among them. I have clicked a check box and all is now well. Many many thanks for pushing me to this conclusion.
