Accessing shared folder on XP Pro machine from XP Home machineHi, I'm having trouble getting from Home to shared folders on XP - I can't
see the computer under the "view workgroup computers" but I can access it via typing in the IP address under Run. My main issue is setting up security so that only certain users can, from across the network, get to certain shared folders. I've setup the usernames and passwords, and limited the shared folders to those certain users, but when I try to access them remotely, I don't get a prompt to enter in a username and password, and I'm just denied access outright. How can I cure this? Many, many thanks for your help! Destin Richter rich***@newmexico.com For clarification, when I say Home, I mean my Windows XP Home system. The
other system is a Windows XP Pro. I can get to the server only by typing in the IP address, and not by using the system name of Server. How can I cure this? It is completely untrue that "XP Home cannot see XP Pro shared folders other than via IP address". You did something wrong, probably something simple with which we could have helped you. Oh well. Too late now. Malke Malke, it's not too late at all. I'm just going about it another way, but
overall, I simply want the XP Pro to prompt a user on a remote workstation for a username and logon password in order to access a shared folder on my XP Pro server. Get in touch if you are inclined as I'd be very open to looking at any solutions you have in mind. All versions of Windows can see XP Pro shared folders via the computer name. XP Home vs. XP Pro is not causing the problem. >Loading XP Pro into computer in question and expect good results. There's no need to replace XP Home with XP Pro. Doing that won't helpif there's a configuration problem on the XP Pro computer that you're unable to access. When access via IP address works and access via computer name fails, make sure that NetBIOS Over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers: a. Open the Network Connections folder. b. Right click the local area network connection. c. Click Properties. d. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). e. Click Properties. f. Click Advanced. g. Click WINS. h. Click the Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP button. The problem could also be caused by the way that the shares are configured.
