XP Pro set up to accept incomming VPN connections

I'm trying to set up a computer running XP Pro to accept incomming VPN
connections. Right now the only option in the connection wizard is to accept
connections over the parallel port. I would like to connect over ethernet, is
that possible?

Thanks,

Dan.

Hi, Dan. As you've discovered, the New Connection Wizard doesn't have
a check box for Ethernet.  To set up a VPN connection to use Ethernet:

1. Don't check any of the boxes under "Connection devices".
2. Select "Allow virtual private connections".

thanks, I can get a VPN connection to a tower on the same network that I am
on, using NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS compatible transport protocol, but when I
try to use the TCP/IP Protocol I get error message 733. I would like to
access this tower from outside the network, will I need to use TCP/IP to do
this? and how do I figure out which port the VPN uses so I can configure the
router to send incomming calls to this tower?

Dan.

With TCP/IP, error 733 could mean that the VPN server and client
aren't getting IP addresses.  If there isn't a DHCP server to make the
assignment automatically, right-click the incoming connection, click
Properties > Networking > Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) > Properties, and
specify a range of two private addresses.

Assign a static IP address to the tower's LAN connection.  Configure
the router to forward port 1723 TCP to that address, and/or enable
PPTP Passthrough (GRE Protocol 47).

Alright, I've got my laptop connecting to the my Tower using TCP/IP (PPTP),
when I'm on the same network. But I cannot connect from outside the network.
I use the router's WAN IP address. I've configured the router's virtual
server to redirect to the tower's IP address, using port 1723 TCP and I am
receiving error 721.

Any suggetions?

Dan

I'm not sure what the problem is at this point, Dan.  I just did a web
search for "vpn xp error 721" and got thousands of sites with possible
solutions.  Take a look at some of those.

You might also post your question in news group
microsoft.public.windowsxp.work_remotely.  If you do, be sure to
mention what make/model of router you're using and what type of
Internet connection you're using from outside your network.
