Trouble wharing files ...

Hi,

I have two machines, a Windows 2000 Desktop and a Windows XP laptop
connected through cables to my home router.  On the Win2000 machine, I
wanted to share the contents of the "My Documents" folder with the XP
computer.  On the win2k folder, I right clicked on the folder, went to
"Properties", selected the "Sharing" tab, clicked the "Share this
folder" radio button, and then enabled full permissions.  But on my XP
machine, I can't see the win2k folders anywhere.  Where do they
normally appear?  How else can I begin troubleshooting this problem?

Thanks, - Dvae

Dvae,

Your problem would most frequently be caused by a misconfigured or overlooked
personal firewall, or other security component. There are several other
possibilities too.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html

Remember that "My Documents" may require properly setup access.
Unauthenticated, ie Guest, access may not be sufficient.

Make sure that NetBT is consistently Enabled.

Finally, look at "browstat status",  "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and
"net config workstation", from each computer, and diagnose the problem.  Read
this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download
browstat!):

Thanks but this answers all but one key question.  If the win2k shared
folders are visible to the xp machine, where would those folders be
visible  (e.g. My Documents, My Shared Folder, etc.)?

Thanks, -

The special folders (e.g. My Documents, My Shared Folder, etc.) are unique to
the owner account locally.  Thru the network, you'll find them under
"C:\Documents and Settings\(name of user)...".  This presumes that the account
used for network access has permission to access these personal folders.
