connection problems. winsock? Please help

Im having problems with my internet connection.
When i start my browser it takes a long time to display the start page. Then
I can browse 4-5 web pages in a row with incredibly slow loading speeds. Then
when I click a link/type an url i get the "page cannot be displayed" message.
This continues until I release/renew my ip, then I can browse a couple of
pages again before the same message comes up.

If I run the "diagnose connection" option in my internet explorer, it says
it detects a problem in my winsock catalog. Then it asks if to restore these
files to default. I answer yes, reboot and nothing has changed. I also tried
downloading a few tools to fix winsock, but nothing helps. It makes no
difference if I connect with cable or wireless.

Please if anyone has any ideas, I would be most grateful.

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the
malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what
programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

In your case, I would answer the second question first since malware is
one of the primary reasons for connectivity/Internet problems in
Windows.

If you have XP SP2, you can do:

Start>Run>cmd [enter]
netsh winsock reset catalog [enter and reboot]

However, if your computer is not clean or there is some other reason
(hardware, perhaps) that won't help.

Im pretty sure my computer is clean.
I have scanned it with: lavasoft ad-aware, spybot S&D, and Fsecure anti virus.
My windows installation is only a week old. Since then I have been
downloading updates "in the background" several times. I think maybe it
started to malfunction after such an update, but I am not completly sure. The
updates Im talking about is the usual windows updates/service packs so they
should not be causing these problems. Then again, what do I know.

Also Im pretty sure it was working after installing SP2. For a while anyway.

If you have any suggestions I would certainly be grateful.

You didn't say how you connect to the Internet. I think I'd reinstall
the drivers for whatever device you're using - modem or NIC.

I`ve now reinstalled my modem drivers, my wlan drivers and pretty much every
other driver. It doesn`t help.

This is really a quite hopeless situation

Oh, but I forgot to say. I can play online games if I am lucky enough to be
able to log in. What could this mean.

Anyone with a clue? please.

Larsson, you didn't answer Malke Q about the specs of your OS,Connections,
Apps runing to be able to give the procedure which will help you not to harm.
Here is harming guess, through your Modem/Router in the Bin?.
Does this help.
Sorry if I'm being Sarcastic or cynical in this.
Please report back with more info if you need help.

Thank you nass and Malke for trying to help me. I am certainly greatful that
you take the time to post and dont find your answers anything but helpful.

Needless to say I am no guru in network problems, so I will just try to
provide the information that I know.

I am using a laptop with a build-in wireless card to connect to a
router/modem in my home. My friends have no problem connecting to the
internet through the same router/modem, so the problem is on my computer.

I have also tried connecting with a tp cable to the router and it makes no
difference.
I am running windows XP proffesional SP2. Windows was installed a week ago.
SP2 a couple of days ago.

I can play online games for as long as I want to, but regular browsing
(opening new pages) is not possible after a couple of minutes. Then I have to
/release /renew my ip.

I have tried Internet explorer 6 and Mozilla firefox, both with same results.
I have tried to fix/reset my winsock settings and to re install all my
drivers.

That is as all I really know about my problem.

thx again.

Larsson

This is really a poser, Larsson. I wish I could look at the machine
hands-on. I don't know what a "tp cable" is, but I'm going to guess you
mean a regular ethernet cable. So we know the problem occurs whether
you connected wired or wireless, which means it isn't your hardware.
And your friends experience no problems at all using the same modem and
router which makes me feel the modem and router are OK.

What firewall are you using, just the Windows Firewall? I need to know
that you are really behind a router. If you are, you'll either have a
combination cable/dsl modem-router or you'll have two devices - the
cable/dsl modem plugged into another little box which is the wireless
router.

I need to know exactly what you have because I want you to do a clean
boot with no other programs running and see what happens to your
Internet connectivity. If you are behind a router and just surf to some
safe sites, you'll be OK. I want Windows machines to have a software
firewall along with a router, but you'll be OK for the test if you're
behind a router.

Here are the instructions for doing a clean boot, but don't do them
until we are 100% sure you are behind a router. If the instructions
look confusing to you then have a professional computer person come
on-site and check things out. There is no shame in calling in a pro; I
don't hesitate to call an electrician when I need one.

You said you installed all your drivers, but you didn't say why you
needed to clean-install Windows. Please include that information in
your next post.

But thx for the tip, it works in safe-mode now at least.

How are you connecting to the Internet? If you are connecting with a
dialup modem, what does your wireless adapter have to do with it?
Please give a clear description of your network, hardware, and method
of connecting to the Internet.

Hi everyone,
I am having a little problem with my internet connection since I installed
internet explorer 7.
I Can't use my FTP programs such as Webdisk client which I need for school,
and I can't use other programs that access the internet such as Pokerstars.com
They both say connectivity error or unable to connect.
I can use the internet though, and surf and read my email, and use msn
messenger, and limewire, I just can't use certain programs.  I have
uninstalled them and reninstalled them, but still nothing.

I ran a diagnostic and it came back with this

OK, great. Then we do know that some program and/or process that is
running in Regular Mode may be preventing a good Internet connection.
Do the clean-boot troubleshooting. This means starting with only the
essentials BUT you need to run in Regular Mode. Then you slowly (one
thing at a time!) add programs until you find the troublemaker.

I want you to do two more things for me first, though. You've said that
you installed drivers. Did you get the drivers from the hardware
mftr.'s website? Here is where you get drivers:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

I want you to make sure the drivers you are using for your network
adapter (NIC) are correct. What network card are you using? Here's how
to find out what's in your machine:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific
model machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers
anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor. The older Aida32 is good for this, too.

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html - Belarc Advisor
http://www.aumha.org/free.htm - Aida32 (hosted on Jim Eshelman's site)

So the first thing I want you to do is be absolutely sure you've got the
right drivers installed for your NIC. If you really really have the
right drivers OR you install the right drivers and they don't help then
the second thing I want you to do is to uninstall the NIC and put in a
different known-working NIC.

If your current NIC is onboard (part of the motherboard), disable it in
the BIOS and stick in a PCI NIC. You can get a NIC for under $20USD so
this isn't a big expense.

If changing drivers and/or the NIC doesn't help, then do the clean-boot
troubleshooting. My reasoning for doing things in this order is that I
think it's quicker and easier to 1) deal with the NIC drivers; 2) throw
in another NIC than to do the methodical clean-boot troubleshooting.
And that way you eliminate the NIC itself as the culprit.

If all this seems too much - and I think you're doing great! - take the
machine to a reputable shop (not your local BigStoreUSA type of place).
When your hard drive failed, did you test it with a diagnostic utility
downloaded from the drive mftr.'s website? I'm concerned that there may
be a motherboard issue here. I'm not saying there is, just that I can't
rule it out since I haven't seen the machine for myself.

OK, let me know what happens. Don't worry about how long it takes to get
back to me. We all have Real Lives(tm)! ;-) It's 5:28 AM here in
California (USA) and pretty soon I have to go finish setting up a
server and then pick up a sick computer. But I'll be back to check up
on you!

Hi, again.

I thought I might post the belarc file for you. At least then you know what
my system is like.
http://folk.ntnu.no/bjornsle/specs.pdf
(I blanked out some areas I didnt want on the web.)

When I installed my drivers I just used the CD that came with the PC. The
system has always been working fine with these drivers. I also now tried to
update the drivers via the web from the system tab in my control panel, but
it says It cannot find any newer drivers than the ones I´ve got.

You can see in the belarc file that I have quite some software installed, so
a trial and error method of disabling programs will be quite consuming.

Im thinking I can backup my important info and re-install windows. I guess
Its not guaranteed that that would work either though.

Who are you thanking and which thread, you have not included any of the
post from that thread so we don't know what it is that has helped.

You've shoved your problem into the middle of another unrelated thread.
