Hi,
i didn't find any information why \\localhost doesn't work on Windows XP
(when i ping localhost everything looks fine IP 127.0.0.1 is returned and
all 4 pings are ok). I have checked all my IP settings, DNS, WINS, hosts
file, etc. All what i can check seems to be ok. I have installed new Windows
XP SP2 (without any KB - i was thinking that it should be a KB problem) but
it's also not working. I have checked \\localhost on Windows Server 2003 SP1
and ... voila works fine. I do some investigation and check information in
technet, microsoft site and google ... found nothing about that (or i have
missed something). Could someone tell me why \\localhost doesn't work on
Windows XP SP2 (and i have forgotten, Windows firewall was turned off on all
my test machines).
When i put \\127.0.0.1 in explorer (or \\computer-netbios-name) then local
shares are displayed, but \\localhost doesn't work - strange ... The error
is (Windows cannot find "\\localhost". Check the spelling and try again, or
try searching for the item by clicking the Start button and then clicking
Search) .

Does anyone know why it's not working on Windows XP SP2 ?

Thanks,
Dariusz Hoszowski

Dariusz,

Look in Hosts.  Is "localhost" defined there?  Is that the only Hosts file?
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/local-name-and-address-resolution-on.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/local-name-and-address-resolution-on.html

Is the absence of "localhost" the only symptom observed?

Chuck,
yes - there is only one hosts file. There is localhost 127.0.0.1 in it.
It is the only symptom i can observe (and it is not only in my network but
it seems to be also at my collegues networks).
Everything besides \\localhost works fine.

Add a test entry to a non-existent host on your subnet
nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn  testhost

Then try pinging testhost.  See if it resolves the name.

There is a subtle difference here.

The "ping" routine is a TCP/IP client and therefore uses the "hosts"
file.

Using \\localhost in an explorer window is using NetBios (or NetBT)
protocol.  NetBT does not use the "hosts" file, rather it uses the
"lmhosts" file.  Most XP machines have a "lmhosts.sam" (sample) file
that can be used by renaming to remove the .sam extension.  Then you
can add a line at the end similar to the line in the hosts file.

See:
"Differences Between the HOSTS and LMHOSTS Files in Windows NT"
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/105997/en-us>

Yes,
that's right what you're saying but ... i have in lmohosts (not
lnhosts.sam) an entry:
127.0.0.1    localhost
and it's not working.

Well, it doesn't work on NT or Win2k, so I wouldn't expect it to work on XP
or Windows Server 2003 either:

Doug,
i have seen it but, as you can see it applies only to (as Microsoft
said):. Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
. Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
. Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition
. Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Standard Edition
. Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 Developer Edition

and as i wrote - it's working on Windows Server 2003 (i have checked it on
Standard and Enterprise) but didn't work on Windows XP SP2.

Why ?

There is a patch for XP SP2 that corrects a loopback problem. It may or may
not help in your case...

Dunno why but you are correct - \\localhost opens an explorer window in
Windows Server 2003, but returns the expected error in XP SP2.  Applying
patch 884020 makes no difference.

If so, i think it's time to ask Microsoft why it's working like that ... I
know many apllications which are using \\localhost for local shares ...

localhost problem does not occur on Athlon 64 PC with XP SP2.  P4 HT PC on
same network running XP SP2 has localhost problem.  Athlon can not access P4
Default Website as localhost, but P4 can access Athlon's localhost Default
Website-- in IIS.

hmmm, now i don't know where the problem could be (all servers which i have
are Pentium or Xeon servers) but there it's going on all Windows Server 2003
machines. I don't think it could be processor dependent but ... who nows.
Thanks for the information Martin, i will check it on my Athlon at home and
let you know if it's also true at my Athlon. If not - then i will ask you to
send me your patch lists.
It's a very strange behaviour ...
It could be better if Microsoft put it in order in new Windows Vista and
Longhorn Server.

Regrads,
Dariusz Hoszowski

Thanks for verifying that the Athlon works for localhost.
The folder on the local computer opens the start iis page.
On the networked computer http://computer_name/filename works.
Where the computer_name is the name of the Athlon.
The localhost folder comes back as "under construction",
if not set up fully, but the "filename" is located in /inetpub/wwwroot/

yes, but did you try \\localhost alone (not with http) - on my Athlon it is
working but the folder is empty.
