Running windows XP SP2.
Everything fine until I tried to add a new laptop to existing home wireless
network.
Something went wrong so that when I log onto the main computer, I get the
following message. " The system cannot log you on now because the domain
STUDY is not available"
I can boot into safe mode  under one of the options(mentions domain), I can
log in normally and use the computer, printer and internet, but firewall and
antivirus is disabled.
How do I get the domain STUDY back? I set up the computer's name as Study.
Thank you for any advice.

Sounds like you tried to join a domain named STUDY, not set the computer
name to STUDY.  I would start up in Safe Mode, right-click My Computer and
select Properties, then the Computer Name tab, click the Change button and
make sure that you have not specified a domain name there.

Thank you for your suggestion. I have followed your advice, but I am not
allowed to leave the computer name blank. The 'ok' button greys out and I
have to press cancel. If I change the computer name to something else, then
re-boot, I get the same error message as before -with the domain name changed
to the new name I gave to the computer under change?? something strange seems
to be going on here. Do you have any other suggestions? I would really
appreciate any help or advice you are able to give. Thank you for your time.
Steve.

I think you're looking in - or filling in - the wrong space.  Changing the
computer name does not change the domain name.  The computer name is the
first box in the "Change" dialog, a domain name (if any) would be in the
middle box with the radio button above that box ticked, and the workgroup
name (which should be filled in along with the computer name box) would be
in the bottom box with the radio button above that box ticked.

Thank you for getting back to me. This is getting very interesting! The radio
buttons and tick boxes you refer to are not present. I know there is a
difference between XP home & professional, (I'm on home edition) On the
system properties page I see computer description - It is blank. beneath that
is full computer name - if I go to change and alter that name -I get my login
error and any new name is described as the domain that is not available????
The only other thing I can change is the workgroup. If I remove both or
either of the full computer name or workgroup, the ok button greys out. I'm
being a bit cheeky in asking but do you do remote assistance where you can
actually look at my screen? Just an idea- i would not be offended by a no
reply as you don't know me etc. Again, any advice will be eagerly recieved!
Thanks again Steve.
