Xbox 360 can't see pc (but pc sees Xbox)network, but the game console can't see the pc in order to share media. I called XBOX Live support, and they couldn't solve the problem after 40 minutes. Background on the problem: I'm not alone - check out http://forums.xbox.com/333/ShowForum.aspx and you'll see a lot of people voicing similar complaints. Even in this forum, too. My network: Broadband cable connects into WAN of DI-604 switch router (latest firmware upgrade, UPnP is enabled, router is supported by Xbox). Two wired ethernet LAN connections run out to pc and Xbox 360. Xbox 360: Except for media sharing, the console has full Xbox Live connectivity. In the System blade, it is currently not connected to a computer. I purchased the xbox 360 last week, so was never previously connected to a pc. When I "Test Media Connection": Network Adaptor = Wired IP Address = Confirmed PC Selected = Failed Under "Network Settings": - the Xbox Live Connection is fine: all Confirmed, and NAT is OPEN. IP Address is 192.168.0.101, subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, DNS settings are Automatic, and both Internet Gateway and Primary DNS Server are 192.168.0.1 PC: The Windows Firewall is off. The only 3rd party protection I have is Norton Antivirus 2005, which is set to Permit all WMP and Zune program activities. All Windows updates automatically download, security and otherwise, including Service Pack 2 and Microsoft Net 2.0. Looking at my Services, WMP network sharing / Zune / UPnP / SSDP are all automatic and running ("Started"). Running ipconfig /all, I get: C:\Documents and Settings\custom1>ipconfig /all Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : MEENA Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : phub.net.cable.rogers.com Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : phub.net.cable.rogers.com Description . . . . . . . . . . . : TE100-PCBUSR 32-Bit Cardbus PC Card Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-20-ED-36-74-08 Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.100 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Saturday, December 02, 2006 9:39:00 AM Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Saturday, December 09, 2006 9:39:00 AM C:\Documents and Settings\custom1> Internet Connection Sharing is not turned on (Xbox connects through router). Both WMP 11 and Zune are fresh installs (even tried uninstalling and reinstalling). And having just installed WMP 11, I don't have a DRM folder to delete (suggested in other threads). The very fact that the PC can see the Xbox, but not vice versa, hopefully will lead to a solution. If there's any more information I should provide, please let me know. Thanks again. My email is AT DOT actual address pchuck mvps org. Hi Chuck,
Thank you for your reply. The results of running "ipconfig /all" are in my original post. I followed your links and downloaded browstat. Running "browstat status", I get: C:\brow\browstat>browstat status Status for domain MSHOME on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{CAEA7ABD-13E3-40DD-82 BA-78946C883D10} Browsing is active on domain. There are WFW servers with an active Browser. I also followed your link to a Microsoft support page and turned on the Fast Switching service (and its dependencies) - no luck, unfortunately. Thanks for your help though. Any other ideas? Any other ideas? Please reread my advice above. I asked for diagnostics from each computer, and the XBox. In a network problem, you need diagnostics from all participants. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/08/solving-network-problems-tutorial.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/08/solving-network-problems-tutorial.html Anytime that you say "one computer can't see the other", it's a case of SMBs not getting from one computer to the other. There are a dozen or so possible reasons for this. The most frequently seen would be a misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall, or other security component. There are several other possibilities too, and any might be the cause of your problem. Read this article with an open mind. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html And when you provide diagnostics, provide them organised, and describe each computer by name, by functionality, and with operating system and hardware details. Don't make the helpers have to guess, you're looking for an answer. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/background-information-useful-in.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/background-information-useful-in.html -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience. My email is AT DOT actual address pchuck mvps org. Hi Chuck,
Thanks again for your help. I read http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html. Comments on your Basic Diagnostics section: 1. I do not have a personal firewall, and Windows Firewall (from the Security Center) is "off" while I attempt to establish a media share with the xbox 360. I have disabled Norton Antivirus. 2. The pc does not have a hardware firewall. The motherboard is a http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Spec.aspx?ProductID=1443. Related, I have successfully connected this pc onto a LAN with other pcs. 3. I will need to read your commentary on NetBIOS Over TCP in greater detail. Unfortunately I can only provide diagnostics from the one pc on the wired DI-604 network. The only other network participant is the Xbox 360. For it, I can only provide the Network Settings it sets out. Here's the bottom line. From Meena: > There are 1 servers in domain MSHOME on transport Meena is getting SMBs from one computer - probably itself. Beyond that, not>\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{CAEA7ABD-13E3-40DD-82BA-78946C883D10} > There are 1 domains in domain MSHOME on transport >\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{CAEA7ABD-13E3-40DD-82BA-78946C883D10} much to tell. Both Meena and the XBox 360 (unnamed) are on the same subnet, so should have connectivity. If you're certain that there's no firewall problem on Meena, then we have to dig deeper. Get either Angry IP Scanner, or SoftPerfect Network Scanner, and run a subnet scan. Save the results to a text file, and post the results. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/12/knowing-whats-on-your-lan.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/12/knowing-whats-on-your-lan.html An XBox 360 runs Windows XP Media Center. That's a regular Network Operating System. You should be able to run browstat on it. Or you could setup an administrative account on it, and use that account to access it remotely, using PSExec (part of PSTools, which is a free SysInternals package). <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/essential-tools-for-desktop-and.html#PSTools> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/essential-tools-for-desktop-and.html#PSTools Maybe CPSServ will tell us something interesting. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/cpsserv-comprehensive-psservice-source.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/cpsserv-comprehensive-psservice-source.html But right now, we don't know a heck of a lot, do we? -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience. My email is AT DOT actual address pchuck mvps org. "But right now, we don't know a heck of a lot, do we?" - Speaking of myself
and networking, truer words have never been spoken. I downloaded and ran Angry IP Scanner. 2 Hosts were alive: Scanned 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.0.255 12/3/2006 7:17:23 PM IP Ping Hostname 192.168.0.1 0 ms N/A 192.168.0.100 0 ms MEENA.phub.net.cable.rogers.com Those would seem to be the router and good ol' Meena. (With the 360 up and running, WMP 11 running and media set to share, windows firewall off and norton antivirus disabled.) "An XBox 360 runs Windows XP Media Center": That is not something I'm clear on. I thought some people have pcs running Windows XP Media Center, which can connect to the 360. (The alternative being to use XP running Service Pack 2, and either WMP 11 or Zune.) As for setting up an administrative account on the xbox 360 itself, I had no idea that was possible. That will take a little more work on my part to figure out. CPSServ: I downloaded, created the Utility folder and my first ever command script. Thanks for the lesson. :) The output of cpsserv.txt follows: Start CPSServ V1.10 - MEENA Find Computer Browser ("browser") Checking \\MEENA... Separately, with fear I read page on the confusion and system malfunctions that come with multiple firewall installations, or the improper / ineffective uninstallation thereof. This computer is "old", having been built in 2002. In the past I've tried out 3rd party firewalls (Zone alarm, shields up), and wonder if their bones are still rattling in the system. Thanks again for all your help. "Pleasure. Here again is my article, with linked articles, that you will need. You will need either Windows Media Connect or Windows Media Center Extender (see the XBox article - looks pretty explicit). <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/07/sharing-files-with-xbox-360.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/07/sharing-files-with-xbox-360.html <http://forums.xbox.com/1076872/ShowPost.aspx> http://forums.xbox.com/1076872/ShowPost.aspx After you get WMC or WMCE installed and working, CPSServ and browstat should return better results. On the other hand, the IP scan not showing anything is a bit perplexing." Chuck, I began last week with Litheon's post at forums.xbox.com and had no success. Reading through the rest of that forum I recognized that several others - but not all - had the same problem as me. From there I made postings here, at avforums.com, and other places. Your efforts have been most educational for me, but having reached full circle, this is where my travels will end. Hopefully either an update to either the xbox 360 dashboard or WMP 11 will solve this peculiar problem experienced by some of us. Best regards, Mischa On Mon, 4 Dec 2006 20:06:00 -0800, Mischa Armin
