No internet/no file-sharing/no recognition of network on host computerFeeling stymied with my home wireless network. I'm running a NetgearWGT624v3 router on Computer A, which is connected to the internet through a cable modem. I have a Belkin Wireless G USB network adapter on Computer B. Computer B tells me that it is connected to my network with a strong signal, but I cannot get internet service or view files on the other computer. Computer A tells me that I do not have a network, even though I've run WZC a few different times. It does not recognize that there's a wireless router connected to the Ethernet NIC. Can anyone tell me where to start with this problem? I'm running WEP security, I've got SP1 and SP2 installed. I'm also running the free version of zonealarm, with DHCP enabled and Computer B's IP address listed under the trusted zone. I've shut down Windows Firewall. I'm also running Norton Antivirus, Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Jon See: http://www.practicallynetworked.com/qa/qa20030619.shtml

Thanks for the link, Cari. The only suggestion on the page that I could see applied to my situation was to turn off WEP. Computer B tells me it is connected and receiving the router's signal with or without WEP - the difficulty is getting internet service and file sharing. If there are more suggestions out there, I'd sure appreciate them. Thanks again, Okay, the problem is solved. Here's what helped:
1. I triple-checked for firewalls. Lo and behold, it turns out that my new computer came with a Norton firewall installed as part of the package. The tutorials I found at http://www.leeindy.com/ helped me configure ZoneAlarm and Norton Internet Security to allow networking, file-sharing and internet access. Further scanning of old posts in this group let me know that "Internet worm protection" in Norton Antivirus works like a firewall so I turned that off. 2. I installed NetworkMagic. This looks like one heck of a useful interface. I don't know that it was essential to solving my problem because I still didn't get file sharing or internet service until... 3. I followed PChuck's advice (http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/) on making sure that IP settings are the same on both computers. The wireless adapter on Computer B was set for a fixed IP address, whereas everything else was configured for DHCP. I changed this, and that turned everything loose. One more word on NetworkMagic - both Belkin's interface and WZC told me that I was connected to my network when I couldn't get internet or filesharing. NetworkMagic inspected the same connection and was upfront about the fact that I wasn't connected. Accuracy in software is a wonderful thing. Take care and thanks, Jon |
