I am trying to establish a home network. The host computer appears to be okay
when I try to set it up on my laptop it says that . Not accessible. You might
not have permission to use network resourse. Contct the administrator of this
server to find out about access permissions.

I am the administrator. I also did a diagnostic and my netwrok adaper
failed and it didnt ping

Your network adapter failed.  So what is the question?

Hi Chuck

I guess I'm a bit confused, (it doesn't take much) but the network adapter
is what? I pinged my host and its okay. I have internet access through my
host wireless or LAN.  I pinged my laptop(remote) and it fails. I tried
setting up the home network so when I click on view group the error I
described earlier comes up.

Ron,

The network adapter is the device which includes the Ethernet jack.  That's the
big fat phone jack, aka RJ-45 connector.  We generally refer to it as an
"adapter", and in older and larger computers it may be part of a separate
circuit card.  In newer computers, it may be part of the main, or "mother"
board.

You load the adapter drivers, which is the software that lets the computer
itself communicate with the adapter.  The adapter than communicates with the
Ethernet cable, and the computer or router at the other end of the cable.

If the Device Manager diagnostics said "network adapter failed", then you have
to start there, and fix that problem first.  Without the network adapter
working, you're off the network.

Please read about diagnosing network problems, and about the layer concept aka
the OSI Network Model.

Hi Chuck

I sure appreciate you getting back to me. Is that also the "net adapter"  I
see listed in Network Connections?  Its called 1394 Connection Net Adapter.
If the network adapter were bad would I still be able to use the internet? I
am e-mailing you from my laptop as we speak. Actually when I do the
diagnostics it falls under the category of net adapter among other things but
the failure is the ping.

Ron,

My pleasure.  A "1394 Connection Net Adapter" would be a Firewire connector, not
Ethernet.  Here's a WikiPedia article.
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FireWire>
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FireWire

Which adapter, when tested, gave "network adapter failed"?  If you have both
Ethernet and WiFi, one could be bad, and you could still have router
connectivity, and Internet service, thru the other.

Why not start with details about your network?  Give us a complete picture.

OK, Ron, if both adapters are working, let's look at their configuration.

Start with "ipconfig /all" please.

Hi Chuck

This is the info on ipconfig /all. I did this from my work . I still have
access to internet but I cannot enter the network per se because when I try
to find printers it can't find them . So I surely have something with my
laptop.

Thanks again

OK, Ron,

That's a good ipconfig log.  You have a laptop, getting IP settings from the NAT
router.  All settings there are good - details in my article.

So what are you getting "Not accessible. You might not have permission to use
network resourse." from?

I am at my home logged on my router. I can do the e-mail thing and the
internet thing. That being said nothing shows up in my MSHOME Workgroug and I
cannt use any printer functions. When I go to access Workgroup the error
says"Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you
have access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not
currently available."

Which is it?  We need both "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all", taken

OK, Ron,

When you have a problem with the home network, you need to provide diagnostics
for the home network.  If you provide diagnostics for another network, all that
you do is cause confusion.

Now if you're getting "Not accessible. You might not have permission to use
network resourse.", "ipconfig /all" is a good start.  With that, though,
"browstat status" is also useful.

So far, what we know is that HOMEOFFICE and ronslaptop are, at some time, on the
same subnet 192.168.2.0/24.  And they have compatible node types.  With
"browstat status", we could know more.  Or, you can do some reading.

Make sure that you don't have a personal firewall problem.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html

Make sure that NetBT is Enabled on both computers.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/netbios-over-tcpip.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/netbios-over-tcpip.html

Or, you could run CDiag on both computers.  Take the following code (everything
INSIDE the "#####" lines). Please DO NOT include ANY portion of the "#####"
lines. (Please verify computer names and ip addresses).

   1. Open Notepad.
   2. Highlight then Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and
Paste (Ctrl-V) into Notepad.
   3. Examine the contents of Notepad. Is the text, as copied, readable (similar
in format to the Base Code)? It won't run well, if it's not easily readable.
   4. If the text is not easily read, then:
          * Stretch the sides of the Notepad window. If this improves things,
then continue with Step 5.
          * Close Notepad, as is (do not bother to save anything).
          * Open Notepad.
          * Under Format, reverse the setting for Word Wrap. If it is unchecked,
check it. If checked, uncheck it.
          * Return to Step 2.

   5. Verify, and correct, names and IP addresses if necessary.  If IP addresses
ever change, your diagnostics will be useless.  IP addresses must be current.
   6. Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root
folder "C:\".
   7. Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
   8. Wait patiently.
   9. When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and
ensure that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A
Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from both computers, please, with both computers powered up and online.

OK, Ron,

From Homeooffice, we see that both computers are visible, which means that NetBT
is not a problem.  This almost has to be a personal firewall or LSP / Winsock
problem on RONSLAPTOP.

Tell us about the work network.  Is it a domain or a workgroup, do you have an
IT person there?  I wonder if the firewall problem comes from a setting picked
up there.
