Home NetworkI am trying to establish a home network. The host computer appears to be okay
when I try to set it up on my laptop it says that . Not accessible. You might not have permission to use network resourse. Contct the administrator of this server to find out about access permissions. I am the administrator. I also did a diagnostic and my netwrok adaper failed and it didnt ping On Mon, 18 Dec 2006 19:37:01 -0800, Ron Hackett <Ron

I guess I'm a bit confused, (it doesn't take much) but the network adapter is what? I pinged my host and its okay. I have internet access through my host wireless or LAN. I pinged my laptop(remote) and it fails. I tried setting up the home network so when I click on view group the error I described earlier comes up. That's the big fat phone jack, aka RJ-45 connector. We generally refer to it as an "adapter", and in older and larger computers it may be part of a separate circuit card. In newer computers, it may be part of the main, or "mother" board. You load the adapter drivers, which is the software that lets the computer itself communicate with the adapter. The adapter than communicates with the Ethernet cable, and the computer or router at the other end of the cable. If the Device Manager diagnostics said "network adapter failed", then you have to start there, and fix that problem first. Without the network adapter working, you're off the network. Please read about diagnosing network problems, and about the layer concept aka the OSI Network Model. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/08/solving-network-problems-tutorial.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/08/solving-network-problems-tutorial.html <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osi_model> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osi_model -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience. I sure appreciate you getting back to me. Is that also the "net adapter" I see listed in Network Connections? Its called 1394 Connection Net Adapter. If the network adapter were bad would I still be able to use the internet? I am e-mailing you from my laptop as we speak. Actually when I do the diagnostics it falls under the category of net adapter among other things but the failure is the ping. A "1394 Connection Net Adapter" would be a Firewire connector, not Ethernet. Here's a WikiPedia article. <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FireWire> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FireWire Which adapter, when tested, gave "network adapter failed"? If you have both Ethernet and WiFi, one could be bad, and you could still have router connectivity, and Internet service, thru the other. Why not start with details about your network? Give us a complete picture. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/background-information-useful-in.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/background-information-useful-in.html -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience. If you provide diagnostics for another network, all that you do is cause confusion. Now if you're getting "Not accessible. You might not have permission to use network resourse.", "ipconfig /all" is a good start. With that, though, "browstat status" is also useful. So far, what we know is that HOMEOFFICE and ronslaptop are, at some time, on the same subnet 192.168.2.0/24. And they have compatible node types. With "browstat status", we could know more. Or, you can do some reading. Make sure that you don't have a personal firewall problem. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html Make sure that NetBT is Enabled on both computers. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/netbios-over-tcpip.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/netbios-over-tcpip.html Or, you could run CDiag on both computers. Take the following code (everything INSIDE the "#####" lines). Please DO NOT include ANY portion of the "#####" lines. (Please verify computer names and ip addresses). 1. Open Notepad. 2. Highlight then Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and Paste (Ctrl-V) into Notepad. 3. Examine the contents of Notepad. Is the text, as copied, readable (similar in format to the Base Code)? It won't run well, if it's not easily readable. 4. If the text is not easily read, then: * Stretch the sides of the Notepad window. If this improves things, then continue with Step 5. * Close Notepad, as is (do not bother to save anything). * Open Notepad. * Under Format, reverse the setting for Word Wrap. If it is unchecked, check it. If checked, uncheck it. * Return to Step 2. 5. Verify, and correct, names and IP addresses if necessary. If IP addresses ever change, your diagnostics will be useless. IP addresses must be current. 6. Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root folder "C:\". 7. Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag". 8. Wait patiently. 9. When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and ensure that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post. Do this from both computers, please, with both computers powered up and online. ##### Start CDiag Assembled Code @echo off set FullTarget1=HOMEOFFICE 192.168.2.2 set FullTarget2=ronslaptop 192.168.2.3 set FullTarget3= set FullTarget4= set FullTargets=%FullTarget1% %FullTarget2% %FullTarget3% %FullTarget4% set FullTargets=%FullTargets% 127.0.0.1 set PingTargets=www.yahoo.com 66.94.230.32 192.168.2.1 Set Version=V1.40 @echo CDiagnosis %Version% >c:\cdiag.txt @echo Start diagnosis for %computername% >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo Full Targets %FullTargets% >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo Ping Targets %PingTargets% >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo Over All Analysis >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo Enumerate Shares >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt net share >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo Adhoc Browser View >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt net view >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo Full Targets Analysis %FullTargets% >>c:\cdiag.txt for %%a in (%FullTargets%) do ( @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo Target %%a >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo "%computername% ping %%a" >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt ping %%a >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo "%computername% net view %%a" >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt net view %%a >>c:\cdiag.txt ) @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo Ping Targets Analysis %PingTargets% >>c:\cdiag.txt for %%a in (%PingTargets%) do ( @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo Target %%a >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo "%computername% ping %%a" >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt ping %%a >>c:\cdiag.txt ) @echo. >>c:\cdiag.txt @echo End diagnosis for %computername% >>c:\cdiag.txt notepad c:\cdiag.txt :EOF ##### End CDiag Assembled Code-- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience.
