Browsers cannot use port 80 after 5 minutesFrom what Ive seen online this is a pretty rare problem.
Basically from starting XP SP2 and loading up IE7 or Firefox I can use the internet for about 5 minutes before I get server not responding errors when I try to access a page. My current workaround for this is to use a proxy that works on a different port (not port 80) which leads me to believe the problem is with 80. In fact all programs that use port 80 only work for this initial 5-10 minute period then dont work. Has anyone else encountered this problem, or hasa solution for it? Hi Brokenlynx:
My first guess is that your firewall or router (if you have one) or some other security software is, for some reason, placing a restriction on the use of port 80. You can probably determine if this is the case by examining the logs. Im currently using the windows XP firewall with AVG antivirus (suffers from
the same port 80 issue in terms of updates), Ive tried turning off the firewall with no luck and because of the issue Im unable to access my router settings but I suspect that my router is not part of the problem as it occurs only after rebooting. What if when it stops working you turn off the router for a full minute and then turn it back on and wait for Windows to re-establish the connection? The Windows Firewall would not cause this and I don't see how AVG could. I have since fixed this problem and no longer need support.
For the benefit of anyone with a similar problem it was an issue with the vsmon.exe file of ZoneLabs ZoneAlarm firewall. Although the firewall had been disabled a long time ago this file which is a service (accessed using services.msc from 'run') was blocking communication through port 80 causing my problem. I fixed it by uninstalling Zonealarm completely (deleting remaining directories in program files and C:\windows\system32\Zonealarm) after using the standard add/remove programs dialogue. After doing this you should also check that TrueVector Internet Monitor isn't in the services list for windows if it is go into safe mode to disable it. Glad you resolved your issue. Complete uninstall directions for Zone Alarm products are described here: http://www.nohold.net/noHoldCust25/Prod_1/Articles55646/clean_install.html Earl Grey Brokenlynx wrote: Show quoteHide quote > I have since fixed this problem and no longer need support. > > For the benefit of anyone with a similar problem it was an issue with the > vsmon.exe file of ZoneLabs ZoneAlarm firewall.
