does router use affect connection speed?Wondering if use of a router takes away some of the speed I get from a
cable modem connection? I get 13 Mbps with direct connection to cable modem,, but with wired router and no other computers running, do not get above 7.5. Is this normal? Thanks Al "Alan" <moskowa1NOSPAM@yahoo.com> wrote in message Maybe.news:hsejh.1950$Bf.895@newsfe12.lga... > Wondering if use of a router takes away some of the speed I get from a > cable modem connection? That being said, when I do a speed test here: http://test.lvcm.com/ through my WGR614NA (with firewall, etc. ON), I get what I'm paying for - 7.68M down, 512K up. So, none of the overhead's showing here. Maybe the speed check app is not making any allowance for the router and the Cox one is?? dunno Check your router's various settings. In particular you might want to play with the WAN MTU settings - 1500 is usually the default - try lowering it to 1492. In general Cable/DSL Routers do Not reduce the "Speed" of the connection. Routers are actually mini computers, so their overhead is minimal. However a specific unit, or and some Off brand ill conceived devices might affect the Network. Jack (MVP-Networking).
