initial net logon very slow

My Dell laptop is very slow to logon to the internet,
to start reading or sending mail,
to start downloading anti-virus files.

It can take up till 60 seconds before the connection is made.
Once the connection is established speed is normal.

I think this could be because the laptop has several net-interfaces:
wifi wireless (not activated)
bluetooth (not activated)
telephone modem (not activated)
G3card and software (activated)
and last but not least - the good old fashioned
RJ45-plug
The laptop also has Skype that uses an internet connection.

Is the logon time so slow because XP tries the (useless) wireless
network-gateways before the cabled one?
If yes, is there a possiblilty to change this order so that the pc tries the
RJ45-socket first.

In general, Windows will try the fastest connection first, then slower
connections.  I would disable all connections not in use in Device Manager
so that Windows need only select from those that are in use.  Your G3 card
may not be permanently connected - it may be connecting as needed and
disconnecting when not in use.  Your ISP could tell you if this is the case.
