Problems with mixed WIN 2000 and XP Computres

My network was composed of 2 windows 2000 Pro, 1 Windows 2000 Server,
and 1 Win 98 computers.   I had enabled both TCP/IP and net BEUI and
all worked well.  All hard drives were shared and all drives were
available to all othe machine.

I recently upgraded so that now I have:
1 Windows 2000 Server
1 Windows 2000 Pro
1 WIndows XP PRO and
1 Windows XP media Center 2005

I stll had Net BEUI on all of the machinens along with TCP/IP.  The
problem was I would frequently experience lengthy delays attempting to
access hard drives on the 2000 machinees from the XP machines.  Between
2000 machins and XP machines - all appeared to be ok.

On doing some reading, it appears that having both ptoocals is probably
a bad idea and I should really only have TCP/IP.  I removed Net BEUI
from all 4 machines and then rebooted them all.

Now what I have is the XP machines share just fine with each other.
The 2000 machine share just fine with each other.  But I am having a
hard time getting sharing betweek operating systems.

This is setup as a workgroup and the name of the group is HOME.  If I
go to either of the 2000 machine and drill down to HOME and open it up
I see all the other machine but can't access the two XP machines.  If I
go to either of the XP machines and drill down through HOME, I only see
the other 2 XP machine.

I don't know how much more information I can provide at this point but
if anyone has any suggestions, or recommendations, or web sites to
check out.  Please let me know.

Thanks,
Bob

Bob,

Sounds like a segmented browse domain.  What order did you reboot the computers?

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html

Take a look at "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all", from two Windows 2000 and
two Windows XP computers, and diagnose the problem.  Read this article, and
linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download browstat!):

Hi Chuck, I think you are on the right track.  I got a copy of ipconfig

I think I'm going to need help understanding them and determining my

The Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 PRO, and Windows XP MCE run
virtually all of the time.  The Windows XP Pro is a laptop Nd is
unplugged or on standby regularly.

Does this provide enough information to help me get started?

Thanks again for all the help.

That's a good start, Bob.

The ipconfig logs for all computers are good.  All computers are on the
192.168.0.0/24 subnet, and all have compatible Node Type.

The browstat logs are interesting.  HomeControl is a good baseline - it sees 4
servers on 1 domain, and has elected itself master browser.  Dream sees 2
servers, and recognises HomeControl as the master browser.  EMachines sees only
2 servers, and has elected itself master browser.  Compaq sees 2 servers, and
recognises EMachines as the master browser.

So you're right - although HomeControl sees 4 servers, Dream, and EMachines /
Compaq, have made 2 separate broadcast domains.

Check that NetBT is consistently Enabled!
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/netbios-over-tcpip.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/netbios-over-tcpip.html

And check for personal firewalls, forgotten or misconfigured.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html

Then go thru the rest of the issues in my troubleshooting guide.

And if the above get you nowhere, let's see what we get from CPSServ.
