404 page not found errors on good web pages2 other identical laptops not experiencing same problem here on wireless net at ski resort in Utah. OS is XP Home,SP2 all updates current. Just upgraded to IE7, might be coincidence. Uninstalled it, same problem. Uninstalled all JAVA and reinstalled JAVA with update 10, still problem. Compared all Internet settings to other Laptops, they are the same. Turned off all firewall/AV/Int Sec, still problem. Uninstalled Norton Int Sec 2007 and reinstalled, still problem. Experience same 404's with Netscape 8.1 Here are some of the wesites that give the "page not found error" there are many more but this is a sample from a google search. www.rr.com/flash/index.cfm http://forums.techguy.org/archive/f-21-p-404.html http://nedmartin.org/site/.src http://www.webcheatsheet.com/asp/asp_troubleshooting.php Clicking on any of the gives the same result except the name of the webpage listed in the "Open www.*****.*** line. Example below: The page cannot be found The page you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. Please try the following: * If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly. * Open the www.webcheatsheet.com home page, and then look for links to the information you want. * Click the Back button to try another link. HTTP 404 - File not found Internet Information Services Technical Information (for support personnel) * More information: Microsoft Support If I click on the web page in the "open" line I always get the same page but the address is http://www.*********.***/ekgnkm/default.asp where ****.*** is the webpage listed in the original 404. This page says "You are connected to the Internet However..." At this point ready to format hard drive and reinstall Windows but feel like I am surrendering if I do so. any help would be greatly appreciated. This sounds like either a DNS or MTU problem. Diagnose it first. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/05/identifying-dns-problem-in-your.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/05/identifying-dns-problem-in-your.html -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience.
