Help for the clueless, please.

Good Morning,
I have to admit to being totally out of my depth and in dire need of
assistance.
I have a small local net, mainly running XP SP3, with one oddment
running Ubuntu.
The Ubuntu is used as a mail server and filestore.
I want to be able to access this filestore remotely. To this end I
purchased an ADSL (wireless) router which has native VPN capability.
Thinking that would give me secure connectivity to my net. I think it
does but too secure! I can connect remotely to the router it seems but
no further.
I was expecting to be able the invoke network neighbourhood after
connecting and then be able to browse the various shares on my local
net, but sadly, that is not the case.
Could you tell me please, what should I have done, and what I could do
now to get it going? I'm not too bothered about the Ubuntu, I'm pretty
sure it could be persuaded to conform to the Windows environment if I
could successfully get through to that.
Thank You.

To browse network over VPN, it is better to have a WINS server. In your
case, you may want to create a batch file to map all shared drives. Or this
search result may help.

Thanks for the pointer Bob, I'm going for a read, I might be some time!

Hi
VPN capability can mean VPN pass through, which actually means that it would
allow VPN through but would not do any thing VPN wise.
Or VPN End Point, which means that the Router actually have a sort of VPN
server build in.
Depending on what you have the Network need to be configured to deal with
VPM too.

It would seem my Router implements a VPN End point, I can find nothing
in my documentation suggesting it performs 'pass through' and connecting
and nothing else suggests 'end point' to me. I'll check with my tame?
support person, Monday.
Assuming 'End point' what form of configuration would I need to apply to
the network?
'pass through' is easier to understand, and if I could drive Linux
properly/at all, easier to implement.
I had spent some time previously attempting to configure the Ubuntu
machine to handle a VPN, before I discovered the Router I was using then
didn't speak VPN at all, hence purchasing the current beast, thinking it
handled all to do with VPN natively. Sadly not the case.

Hi
If the outer is End Point the manual would have a section about it.
Unfortunately I am not familiar with Ubuntu so I can not help at the OS end.

It quite likely does but not necessarily under that title.

I think it is now functional but I now have further problems.

I set up port forwards on 137-139 tcp&udp to point towards the Ubuntu
which is running Samba, I'm told Samba performs as a WINS server.
A friend connected and managed to trawl about, copying files from and to
my desktop on this machine which is not the Ubuntu! He did however say
he couldn't access any network services, not sure what he meant by that,
he's out at the moment. He did suggest though he thought he had more
access than I intended, so it looks like I've gone from extreme to the
other, no access to unlimited. I need to figure out how to and limit set
per user access.
