How to remove/delete old domain (name) from XP professional

I had a VPN connection to my ex employer's network and now need to remove
their domain but XP won't let me unless I'm a domain administrator. The
company I worked for is dissolved so I have no way of logging on to their
network nor getting their IT people to help. It's frustrating as I can not
rename my computer or change defaults such as Automatic Updates etc until I
can remove my ex company's domain name.

If you have a computer that was a domain member and now is yours alone, the
best solution is to do a clean install of Windows. There will be many
domain settings/restrictions in place that will cause you issues.

you will need on-hand

If for some reason you are unwilling to do this, then log on as local
Administrator and make your changes there. If you don't have the local
administrator password (and you probably don't), you can blank it with
NTpasswd.
