removing router from home networkI have a router which was useful when I had 2 computers, but now I only have
one. And since I got rid of my second computer, the router hangs up 2 or 3 times a day and has to be power cycled. It's a hassle I don;t need. I tried using the network wizard to indicate that I now connect directly into the internet, but no matter what I do, the computer defaults back to a router arrangement, and I get no connection when I plug directly into the cable modem. There must be something that the network wizard is not resetting to cause this inability to switch modes. Any ideas? Hi
Leave the wizard alone and configure manfully the TCP/IP according to your ISP specifications. It might be that you need to call the ISP and ask them to reboot on their side in case the service involves some type of authentication (PW. Id, or MAC number). BTW, using a Cable Internet connection with a Router is much more safer even if you have only one computer. Try to do hard Reset of your current Router, also check the Router's support site for new firmware. Otherwise (given the current prices) I would suggest to buy a new inexpensive Router.
