Password Issue when sharing files between VISTA & XP machinesrouter and an XP machine that uses a wireless adaptor. I am trying to share files between both computers. I have them both assigned to the same workgroup. There is no problem accessing the folders that are on the VISTA machine from the XP machine. When I try to access the files on the XP machine from the VISTA machine, I am asked for a password & user name. (I didn't think this was necessary since I am using XP Home edition). When I enter the user name and password that I use for logon to the XP machine, I get an error that the Password or User name are not recognized. I suspect that the problem is with Windows or the way I am entering the user name because I know that I am entering the password correctly (spelling and case) I have tried enter the user name a variety of ways: 1. I have tried just entering the user name since the dialog box already acknowledges the Computer name. 2. CHRIS\KenS (where CHRIS is the computer name and KenS is the user) Any help would be appreciated KenStupka wrote:

You do not need to be logged into the same account on all machines and the passwords assigned to each user account can be different; the accounts/passwords just need to exist and match on all machines. DO NOT NEGLECT TO CREATE PASSWORDS, EVEN IF ONLY SIMPLE ONES. If you wish a machine to boot directly to the Desktop (into one particular user's account) for convenience, you can do this. The instructions at this link work for both XP and Vista: Configure Windows to Automatically Login (MVP Ramesh) - http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Autologon.htm Create shares as desired. XP Home does not permit sharing of users' home directories or Program Files, but you can share folders inside those directories. A better choice is to simply use the Shared Documents folder. See this link for details about Vista sharing: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx Malke The group on each machine is named exactly the same. I created user accounts
with identical names and passwords and I still have the same log-on issue.
