Thanks for the quick reply.

I used a tech republic tutorial for setting up the VPN and it said to have
ICS turned on for the VPN server.  I can certainly turn it off.

Yes, I can ping the external IP address and also the internal IP of the VPN
server with not problem.

If you you can ping the VPN host, it could be the permission issue. Do you
receive a system error if you do net view \\vpnhostipaddress?

I decided to try turning off the firewall on the VPN server to see what would
happen.  I was able to map a drive to \\ipaddr\share but still not to
\\computername\share.

I would just as soon not have the firewall off.  Do I only need to open port
1743?  And only for TCP?

Is it okay to map to the ipaddress?  I have read that this is not very
reliable.

Also, how many users can use the VPN at one time?  If it can be more than
one, do they each need a separate log in?

If you can map using IP but name, this is name resolution issue. Since this
is XP VPN, it is better to use IP instead of name. Just make sure the XP has
static IP address. In XP VPN, you can have just one VPN connection. These
search results may help.

I really apprciate all of your help.

Since we have a number of people who need to connect and it isn't really
practical to have only connection, we will need another alternative.

Will a server operating system (win2000 or higher) do the trick?

Yes, this if different between workstation like XP and Server. The windows
2000 VPN will multiple connections. Also if you enable WINS server on
server, you won't have name resolution issue.
