choosing an internet connectionI have a computer that connects to the internet through my local area
network. This computer also has a faster wireless internet connection available. I want to remain connected to the LAN for fast file exchange with other computers but I want to access the internet through the faster wireless connection. If I disconnect the LAN the computer goes to the faster wireless connection but when I reconnect the LAN it goes back to that. Is there a way to tell the computer so see the internet theough the wireless rather than the wired connection. -- AB You may want to modify the routing table so that restrict the wired to LAN.

You can create the preference of the Internet traffic by setting the Wireless card's metrics. http://www.ezlan.net/metrics.html As for the LAN's traffic, it depends on what your Network's topology is. It is "No Can Do" if all the computers and the Wireless are part of a peer-to-peer Network that uses the same Wireless Router. We have a local area network which allows fast file sharing bewteen the eight computers in our building. All of these computers access the internet through this LAN. I have a faster wireless DSL that I want to use on the front office computer. I would like to keep the LAN up and running but I would like for the internet connection to choose the wireless connection. I tried using the metric numbers and that did make the computer defalt to the wireless for internet but it also shut down my LAN connection to the other computers. So is there a way to have the internet connection go through the wireless while still keeping the LAN active? -- Show quoteHide quoteAB "Jack-MVP" wrote: > Hi > You can create the preference of the Internet traffic by setting the > Wireless card's metrics. > http://www.ezlan.net/metrics.html > As for the LAN's traffic, it depends on what your Network's topology is. > It is "No Can Do" if all the computers and the Wireless are part of a > peer-to-peer Network that uses the same Wireless Router. > Jack (MS, MVP-Networking) > > "Alan Burton" <AlanBur***@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > news:056A5001-B318-402A-ACB2-0D31B6AC149C@microsoft.com... > >I have a computer that connects to the internet through my local area > > network. If both Network cards are on the same Network they can not work at the same time. If the Wireless connect to the Internet through a separate network (I.e. a different subnet) then it would work. In your case there is only one cohesive Network. I actually have two different DSL connections. The 1st DSL modem is connected to a router which provides internet to all computers in the building as well as providing file sharing on this LAN. All of the computers are assigned static IP addreses on the LAN. The computer in question on this network is located in the front office. I had another separate DSL line installed this week, this new DSL line has a wireless router connected to it. It is set for Dynamic routing and has no IP address or subnet or any of that stuff. This new DSL Line is faster and I wanted to connect to this new router with a wireless USB. I can connect to it and it works great but whenever I go to the wireless router I am disconnected from the LAN and can't see other computers in the office. What I want to try and to is to tell this computer to use the LAN for networking and to use the wireless connection for internet only. I hope that makes sense. So question is how do you do that. -- Show quoteHide quoteAB "Jack-MVP" wrote: > Hi > If both Network cards are on the same Network they can not work at the same > time. > If the Wireless connect to the Internet through a separate network (I.e. a > different subnet) then it would work. > In your case there is only one cohesive Network. > Jack (MS, MVP-Networking) > > "Alan Burton" <AlanBur***@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > news:F97E92A8-3178-489A-A34A-9DF2F69CCD35@microsoft.com... > > Jack: > > > > We have a local area network which allows fast file sharing bewteen the > > eight computers in our building. You have to change the Wireless TCP/IP parameters to match the second Wireless Router. Put the core IP of the Router as the Default Gateway and DNS in the Wireless TCP/IP configuration. By doing so the Wireless card would connect to the second Router. Jack (MS, MVP-Networking). You need to put the wireless router AND the wireless network adaptor which connects to it onto a different subnet and change the default gateway to this new subnet. Jim. |
