Using a Personal Website Link Freely?I own the web page link name below, but departed from a website host where I
used it. A few months ago, I decided I really didn't need the site I had acquired via the ISP, and would pick up a smaller sized free one from SBC Global. Can I still use the link, but direct it to my SBC site? -- W. eWatson (121.015 Deg. W, 39.262 Deg. For more information about the mechanics of websites/domains/hosting, etc. you should use something like Wikipedia or Google. This has nothing to do with XP. Malke Malke wrote:

Traffic direction from one Web Site name (Domain) is done by special servers call Internet DNS. When you own a domain you (and the company that sold you the domain) can control the DNS entry of this Domain and direct the traffic to wherever you decided to direct it to. Once you do not own the Domain any more you can not control the DNS and can not direct its traffic. You do not have to have an Active Web site but you must own the Domain (I.e. you have to keep paying the annual fee for the Domain name). to build a page with their tools. If I didn't have a domain, I would think I'd end up with a domain chosen by them. Maybe something like www.myname-sbcglobal.net. I'd want www.speckledwithstar.net to "point" to the above sbc domain assigned to me. Maybe their PageBuilder allows me to do that. Build a Web site on the ATT space with an ATT name etc. Once it is ready you should contact your Domain Registrar and ask them to redirect the DNS to the ATT site. Some Registrars would do it for free, some might change small yearly fee for the redirection. On the other hand their are Hosting services that can provide better/flexible service than a personal space given to you, and their charges are very low. Example, http://www.dixiesys.com/index.php Jack (MS, MVP-Networking) Show quoteHide quote "Jack-MVP" <j***@discussgroups.com> wrote in message news:OJfTff27JHA.4404@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... > Hi > Traffic direction from one Web Site name (Domain) is done by special > servers call Internet DNS. > When you own a domain you (and the company that sold you the domain) can > control the DNS entry of this Domain and direct the traffic to wherever > you decided to direct it to. > Once you do not own the Domain any more you can not control the DNS and > can not direct its traffic. > You do not have to have an Active Web site but you must own the Domain > (I.e. you have to keep paying the annual fee for the Domain name). > Jack (MS, MVP-Networking) > > "W. eWatson" <notval***@sbcglobal.net> wrote in message > news:5r7_l.37$vO4.35@flpi145.ffdc.sbc.com... >>I own the web page link name below, but departed from a website host where >>I used it. provides with the domain name you own. This can be done if you move your domain to a registrar that provides a redirection service. I use namesecure.com for this purpose. Once you switch your domain to them (or an alternative) you can point the domain name to your SBC site. -- Show quoteHide quote"W. eWatson" <notval***@sbcglobal.net> wrote in message news:5r7_l.37$vO4.35@flpi145.ffdc.sbc.com... >I own the web page link name below, but departed from a website host where >I used it.
