want to create VPN, but can only creat dialup connectionHi,
I have a laptop, running windows xp tablet pc edition (seems to be a version of windows xp professional). I want to create a VPN connection. I choose "create a new connection" and then "VPN". However, it automatically becomes a dialup connection instead of a VPN connection. In the property->networking of the connection, there are only two choices" "PPP" and "SLIP", but I want PPTP which is for VPN. And it automatically use the modem as the connection device. Any help would be greatly appreciate! Update:
I uninstall the modem, and restart the computer. After the computer found the modem and install the driver automatically, I create a VPN connection. This time it seems to be normal, with the correct type (I can select PPTP). However, I can not connect through the VPN. When I double click the icon, the property windown of the connection appears (instead let me connect). I right click it, the "connect" option is gray. When I restart the computer, everything goes back to the problem stated in the first post. I can not create a VPN connection, only a dialup connection. Since I do not have phone line with me, I do not know whether the dialup works or not. Thanks! Hi Stan could you clarify something for me
If you don't have access to a phone line and presumably that also goes for Broadband-how are you trying to connect to the WAN? I would guess Wi-Fi is that right? Thanks for the reply. I am in the office so my laptop is connected to the wired eathernet network. I can also connet to the network using wi-fi. What I am trying to do is to setup a VPN connection, so that I can use it later at home when I need. The problem so far is not I can not connect through VPN; the problem is that I can not even start creating the right connect icon in my network place. (I know this might be confusing). The following is the approach that I used: create a new connection->connect to the network at my place->Virtual private network connection->company name (input ABC-VPN, for example)->VPN server connection (input vpn.abc.com) ->done. Then there is a ABC-VPN icon appears in my network connections. However it is in the dial up catogory. When I look at its property, it uses my modem as the default connection device, and vpn.abc.com is listed as the phone number. Actually for a real VPN connection, no device should be listed and no phone should be dialed. I think something is wrong with my network connection setting, since in the network connections catogority, I can not see my diaup connection, nor the 1394 connection. I can only see the wired and wireless broadband connnection. However, when I checked all the devices in the device manager, all network adapters and modem are working properly. I tried the methods mentioned in http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;825826&Product=winxp and http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320558 But it does not solve the problem. Any suggestions? Thanks
