I have got a peer-to-peer network both running Windows XP SP2. I have
the main computer connected to the internet with a static IP address and
Internet Connection Sharing enabled. The second computer gets a dynamic
IP address allocated by the first computer. It worked very well until
one day the secondary computer couldn't get an IP address. If I set a
static IP address for the second computer it can access the local
network resources, but not the internet. I also tried some other DHCP
clients and they all report that a DHCP server cannot be found. It looks
like the the fault lies with the DHCP server (computer 1). What should I do?

Just assign a static IP address to the second computer. If you are using
ICS then there is no reason to do otherwise.

Problem is, if I assign a static address to both computers, all the network
shares would be available, but the second computer (client) will not be able
to access the internet.

Then you are not properly setting up ICS or doing something else wrong.
If you have broadband, the easiest way to share Internet access and
files between computers on the lan is with a router. The router then
acts as a DHCP server to provide IP addresses and DNS.

Here are some links to help you with ICS and other networking:

It's okay, problem solved. Thanks anyway. I just decided to install WinGate
and have the 1st computer act as a proxy for the second one.
