Adding switch to existing router settingI'm adding a switch to an existing broadband router because I simply
ran out of ports on the router. Well, when I add the switch and connect the new computer to the switch, it cannot get an ip (dhcp enabled) through the router. Workaround I found was to connect the new computer to the router first, obtain an ip, and then unplug it from router and plug it back to switch. That works. I just don't know why I have to do this. I don't want this to cause any problem renewing its ip address days later. Is there a setting in router that I'm not aware of?? TIA. goscot***@gmail.com wrote:

Brand/model of switch? Did you connect the router to the switch's uplink port (if it has one)? Did you use a crossover or straight-thru cable to connect the switch and router? If the switch has a switchable uplink port, di you set it to "uplink"? -- p Both Linksys, Router SPX200 (wireless), Switch (8 port, don't remember
the model, but I believe it's their very popular model). Router doesn't have uplink, however, switch does, but I didn't use it. So I connect one port from the router to one port in switch (not uplink), straight-thru. I believe uplink is to attach another switch or hub (says instruction in switch manual). Well, I only have problem obtain an IP. I don't have any problem surfing or connecting to other computers using above settings so I believe I'm connected ok. Thanks a bunch for replying scottiey***@yahoo.com wrote:

Thanks a bunch for replying http://tinyurl.com/73gmd Question Which ports should I use to hook a hub/switch to the router? Answer Connect a straight through CAT 5 Ethernet cable from a numbered port on the router to the uplink port on the hub or switch. However most Hubs/Switches uplink ports are shared with the port next to the uplink. This means that you can not use the uplink port and the port next to the uplink at the same time, you must use either or. If you are unsure if your hub or switch as a shared up link port, please consult the hub/switches documentation I switch my login here and I think it's causing me to lose posting.
Let me try again. I have both Linksys. Router is SRX200 (wireless) and switch is their popular 8 port. Router doesn't have uplink but switch does. I connect one port from router to one port in switch (not the uplink port), using a straight-true. According to the switch manual, uplink is for another set of switch so I didn't use it. Keep in mind that I don't have connectivity issue here, just problem obtaining an ip address using switch. Sorry for posting several times. Thanks again.
