internet explorer 6 won't shut down

After I close internet explorer, the process iexplorer.exe keeps on running.
As an example, if I were to open and close I.E. five times, I would see five
instances of iexplorer.exe in Task Manager. I have carried out several virus,
spyware and trojan scans with various programs but found nothing

hopeful for any help

You didn't give us any details of the programs you used to clean your
machine. Do you have a full-featured current version (not earlier than
2004) antivirus installed? Is its subscription active and the virus
definitions current?

Start by scanning with either Sysclean or Dave Lipman's Multi-AV:

After your initial scanning with one of these first-line antivirus
tools, if you don't have an av installed get one, update its
definitions, and do a thorough scan in Safe Mode.

Continue with general malware removal in a systematic fashion, doing
everything with updated tools in Safe Mode:
