Signal ProblemI have connected a wireless router to my PC in an upstairs bedroom and a usb
adaptor to a pc in a downstairs dining room. Everything appears to be set up ok, but the downstairs pc isnt finding the wirless router. It did on one occasion show up a very low signal then lost it again. Is there anything i can do to fix this apart from moving pc's. It showed a link
of 76% but signal only got up to 10% then it disconnected and lost the link again. Any ideas. Hi
May be you have electrical noise, http://www.ezlan.net/wbars.html Try to change channels. Otherwise you might be out of functional range. May be this can Help. http://www.ezlan.net/Distance.html http://www.ezlan.net/antennae.html Jack (MVP-Networking). Seems the one way to tell for sure is to move the PC with the connections problem next to the router, just to make sure your setup is right, and avoid spending money if the problem is the setup. In fact, when I first networked, I bought the PC into the room where the router was, I wired the PC to be networked directly to the router first, then disconnected the wire, and tried it wireless, just to be able to eliminate issues of setup, distance, noise etc. I had to move the USB adaptor around on one PC a bit to get the optimal reception. Because I couldn't do this with another desktop that I installed a PCI card, I bought an antennae for $8.95 off of ebay, and placed that antennan about 18" off the floor, rather than use the original antennae that was on floor level. Other options I looked into was: - Moving the router to the center of the house. This would put the router 10 feet closer to the wirelss units, but that means I have to stretch cable to the other side of the room, and run an ethernet cable back to the wired PC. Where it sits right now, at the side of the house, half of the signal is broadcasted to the house next store. - Replace the antennae that came with the router with a larger one (spend around $59.95 or more). - Keep the router where it is, and intall a repeater (spend another 99.95 or more). One problem I noticed was my refigerator stands between the router and my wireless units, and moving the router would also solve that problem. Fortuantely, movng the adapter on one unit, and adding a small antennae to the PCI card of another unit solved the problem for me. - Show quoteHide quote "saturn" wrote: > I have connected a wireless router to my PC in an upstairs bedroom and a usb > adaptor to a pc in a downstairs dining room. thanks for all your replies. Tonight i have signed on and eventually managed to get on the internet on the othe pc but not for very long, it then disconnected. The noise level throughout has been very low even when disconnected, dont know if that means anything. Can i just say that i am very technically illiterate, i managed to do all of this so far due to following instructions in the packet so to speak. I reckon i have done everything right so far in that it has been able to connect. I am however completely lost with some of the advice ie change chanels, extending 10 metres,, (how) etc. I looked at the links supplied but the info is way too technical for me. Just to confirm the wired connection is upstairs,, at front of house, directly below is the living room which then goes through to the kitchen, then to the dining room which is an extension which would have been outside back garden at one time and that is where the other pc is. The house is brick built,, read something somewhere that that made a difference. Could you please when replying, although i appear to know what i am doing,, think of me as a complete IT illiterate,, i feel like one just now. lol
