Hi

I am really struggling here, must be doing something very silly but spent
solong mulling it over I have confused myself,

I have just connected one computer to a new modem/wireless router (3com
3CRWDR100A-72) which after much frustration I have managed to connect to this
computer via 10/100 LAN port to the internet. I have another computer that I
wish to network wirelessly. I have installed a PCI wireless adaptor into this
other computer but cannot get it to receive anything from the router. Is
there an idiots guide to help me? Any hints? I have tried a fixed IP address
and also windows searching automatically, with and without firewall, my head
hurts. I really need a step-by-step guide from the time I turned the computer
on lol

and I have enabled wireless networking on the router !!!!!

If you're sure that you turned on wireless networking in the router, 4
possibilities come to mind for not being able "to receive anything," in
more or less decreasing order of likelihood:

0.  You "hid" or disabled broadcast of the router's SSID in an attempt
to increase security.

1.  The PCI adapter is not installed properly (i.e., you may have to
install the drivers, not just plug it in) or not turned on (I suspect
there is a way to turn the wireless radio off to save power)

2.  The PCI adapter is defective.

3.  The router is defective.

See if you can persuade a friend with a laptop that has a working
wireless connection to come by hour place and see if she can detect your
router.

Turn off firewalls, move the router to the same room as the computer and see
what you get. If you have not accidentally turned off transmission of the
SSID (which is the name you see when you see wireless networks), the "out of
the box" setting for a router is normally able to be used as soon as you
turn the wireless on in it.

I am guessing that:

1) You have interference making wi-fi hard or impossible.

2) You need to just hit the reset button (most need it just held in for 5
seconds) and start again.

Hi
May be this can further Help.
In General, you can debug the Network Settings of a computer by following
these steps.
Check the Network parameters in the Computer's Device Manager. Make sure
that the Network Card drivers are installed correctly; i.e. there is No IRQ
conflict, and No Ghost installation. http://www.ezlan.net/faq#ghost
Step Two Verify Basic network setting in the OS:
http://www.ezlan.net/Installing#verify If the above two Steps indicates that
every thing looks good but functionally it does not work.
Step Three. Check (and repair if necessary) the Socket Layers, Winsock, and
or refresh the TCP/IP Stack. http://www.ezlan.net/clean#refreshnet
If all of the above checks OK.
