continuous aquiring network

My wireless network connection works but has now goes into a continuous
"Aquiring Network address" even when there is already connectivity and when
the IP is manually assigned. This happens both with DHCP assignment and with
manually set IP. The network is working but the little icon in the task bar
just keep grinding on and Network Status Box says "Aquiring Network Address"
even though there already is an IP shown on the Support tab. Anyone know why
this happens? I like to be able to see network activity with the network icon
and I can't see it when it is searching all the time...
Thanks in advance,
RDW

Do you have a firewall installed like Zone Alarm or similar?

Hi Jeff,

No specific software firewall in use, only the regular Windows firewall. I
am behind a hardware one from the router. but I don't think this should make
much difference.

I have Norton AV that has some trojan blocking services but nothing else. I
have had these things all along and this "Aquiring IP" only started recently.
I can't identify anything I specifically did that started the probem.

2 things to try:

1) Turn the power off to the router for 10 seconds. Turn it on again and
wait 30 seconds then check if the problem has gone away. Often this is all
it is.

2) Did you change the router admin username/password when you set it up and
also put in encryption? If you did neither of those things then I can tell
you I *CAN* get into your network, use your internet connection, change your
router details etc. and all of that without any trouble. You do not have to
be a real "hacker" to get in if you didn't protect yourself. In fact, people
often accidentally find networks when they don't want to AND hook on to them
when they aren't protected. If you didn't do any of this, I would suggest
doing a hard reset of the router and setting it up from scratch again and if
you didn't put in encryption and change the admin username/password before,
do it this time.
