Wireless connection only works while wired!

I just reinstalled Windows on an older laptop.  It has an external Wireless
card I purchased last fall.  This problem only happened since I reinstalled
Windows.

When I boot the computer, the wireless card connects to my wireless network,
but says I have Limited or No Connectivity.  I tried Repairing the
connection, but it says it fails to acquire an IP address.

However, if I plug in my wired connection, and then try repairing the
connection, then my wireless connection starts working.  I can unplug my
wired connection and continue using wireless.

This does not happen with another laptop I have, and it did not happen with
this laptop before I reinstalled Windows.  Any help you can give is
appreciated.  Thanks!

Here is the output of ipconfig /all (after the connection is established):

So all we need is ipconfig /all (before the connection is hardwired and
repaired).
Then we can see what changed to make it work.

So the IP address comes right when it works and

Comes right so you can see the outside world, and
it all looks good and works.

Use static address configuration, and put in the
working figures.

I have had the some problem. The computer sees the wireless network with
good signal strength but cannot connect. Until, that is, I plug in the wired
connection. Is use of static addresses the only solution? This seems to be a
Windows bug

Well IMHO MS Zero Config is about as flakey as Plug and
Pray, good for getting newbies with no computer knowledge
up and running, but it often gets things wrong. With P&P
it's hardware conflicts.

Having found a supberb wireless USB adapter, and having
others (don't mention D-Link) that were hopeless, I set up
a USB 2-way switch to share it between two computers.
(Couldn't get another of the ZyDAS based Wealnet adapters.)
Disaster with Zero Config, just couldn't switch wireless adapter
between PC's, put in static addresses, bingo, all works fine.
Throw the switch, wireless icon disappears from one
PC and appears on the other, ready to go, I was surprised
to say the least. Had expected it to get itself into a knot.
Why 2 PC's well that's another story, KVM switches are
there for that situation, and it switches the mouse, I haven't
since all works fine, tried switching both mouse and
wireless USB adapter with the KVM switch.

My interpretation,  DHCP may be you get one shot at
aquiring addresses, which works fine with a wired link,
but if it fails because of signal quality or poor signal it
all goes pear shaped.

This sounds exactly like the problem I am having.  My PC logs the error as
event ID 1001 "your computer will try and obtain an address on its own from
the dhcp server"

How do I come up with a static IP address? I'm a neophyte obviously
