I keep having random problems with my network. I have 2 computers running XP
Home and they are connected through a LinkSys Wireless router. The problem
right now is that the router (or XP) won't allow my computers to see one
another on the network. I created a workgroup named WORKGROUP a year ago, and
on some days the computers see one another, and other days they don't. I'm to
the point where this has become comical. I'm on the upstairs computer at the
moment, and I'm looking at the entire network. All I see is the upstairs
computer, but not the downstairs computer. Why not? We are both in the same
workgroup. We have the same rights. If I go downstairs, and look at the
entire network, I will see the dstairs computer, but not the upstairs. I have
no idea why these computers don't see one another at this moment. They have
seen one another before on the network. I week ago they could see one another
and I had access to both from either computer.

To make matters worse, when I make changes to the network they don't stick.
For instance, net user guest/active:yes. This is a joke. XP is changing this
setting at random times and I have to enter it all over again to gain access.
Why does XP have the right to override the setting I entered? Can you give me
a command that XP can't change at random? I tired of entering weak commands
that XP blows off and changes. How about this command that doesn't stick:
ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u Guest. I think this command is being
overridden by something in XP. Or this command: ntrights -r
SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u Guest. Is this a permanent command? I'm almost
certain it's not, and XP LOVES to change it back to the old setting. Do I
need to REGEDIT something? When I set settings I don't want them auto
changed, and I don't care what XP Home wants.

I go from entering in commands and having things work, to opps lost my
rights and now I'm locked out. Gotta' go enter in the same things over again
and hope they work. Do you know of any permanent commands to allow guest
users access forever, or until I decide to change it. My God, I sometimes get
asked for a user password when loggin on. I have to hit enter to move past
it. I'd like to get rid of that promt as well. It keeps coming back after I
get rid of it.

Did you manually assign IP, DNS and Gateway? If not, do that and let us know
how it goes.

Note - the easiest (and laziest) way to get simple networking running
quickly is to have the same username on any computer you want to network and
the same password for that username then enter the lot in the network name
after that. Once you have done this, do it on the other computer.

Another thing that may be happening is that you have an XP Pro and XP Home
trying to see each other that are SP1 or less. If so, you may need to
update, first or at least open sharing. BTW, you DID share files and OK file
sharing on each machine, yes?

Well I take back the bad things I said about Windows XP Home. The problem
wasn't that XP was ignoring my commands, it was my router, which had been
damaged by a thunder storm. I replaced the router and now the network is
working as it should. Whew, for a while there i was pissed at XP. I was wrong.
