Wireless network between 2 laptops - XP/WI-fi & Win98SE/LAN card

Despite the v good wizards on newly purchased XP running laptop, I've not
been able to connect the new laptop and 'old' laptop.

The 'new' XP laptop is on the internet via a Wi-fi router, and I hve a LAN
card (not previously used) and a PC card for the 'old' laptop which uses
Win98SE.

The least I want to do is access files on the Win98SE laptop and download
some of them onto the 'new' XP laptop.

But, ideally I'd like to set up a wireless network using the LAN card and
the inbuilt wireless capability of the XP laptop.  Further more, to use the
Win98SE laptop as a 'printer server' to be able to print from the XP laptop -
wirelessly.

Has anyone done this and therefore advise what actions need be taken to set
up each laptop ?

Many thanks, Jonathan

Hi

The new Laptop connects wirelessly to the Router.

The old Laptop has a wired card? Connect it with a Cable to one of the
Router's regular ports.

If the oldie is Wireless, then establish a Wireless connection to the
Router.

Should look like this, http://www.ezlan.net/network/router.jpg

You want to share/transfer files between to two Networked computers?

Set the file sharing on each, http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html

When mixing WIN98 on laptop or PC  and XP on other PC'S or laptops
I have found installing NETBEUI protocol on all PC'S and laptops
works fine .
you can find these on your 98 and xp disks   see below

NetBEUI is completely unnecessary to have. Instead, remove all protocols
from the Win98 boxen and add TCP/IP. Then the OP only need follow Jack's
advice or look here for more information from MVP Steve Winograd:

Jack / Bobo / Malke,

Thanks all for the advice.  Having read and 'toyed' with it, the network's
now up and running, the links to the external web-site were particularly
helpful in assisting with assembling the network.  Good site too.

I did actually read from another source about NETBEUI, but managed to set
things up wthout using it in the end.  Thanks anyway.

....One further question...now that my XP laptop is wirelessly connected to
the internet, the Win98SE laptop is connecting via the XP laptop, and I have
file-sharing / printer sharing sorted...how can I be sure the 'network' is
secure and has no 'chinks' in the armour between the three components ?

Unfortunately my ISP's router only has WEP capability (as far as I'm aware),
but the original Wi-Fi connection between the XP laptop and the router has
WEP applied. Both laptops have NIS running on the (and XP laptop has inbuilt
Windows firewall I believe).

Thanks again to all, Jonathan
