problem connecting to the internet on my wireless laptop

can some one please help?i have been trying to connect a wireless laptop to
the internet but it seems to have a problem downloading any form of webpage,
the wireless connection icon in the system tray indicates to be connected to
the internet and i can still go online with skype but thats about it.my
download speed is just 54kbps, not really sure about how the wireless router
is configured but dont think that the problem since my house mate has no
porblem going on-line himself.
