wireless question (quite long)I have had our desktop and laptops networked to share the internet using the desktop as the internet gateway but decided to go for broadband because its too unreliable (i only ever tried to connect one laptop at any one time). It has just suddenly stopped working, the network sometimes shows but none of the computers will connect. Two of the laptops are quite new and have wireless built in, they detect two networks in the neighbourhood. My laptop and the desktop have Dlink pci and pcmcia cards fitted but do not detect these. These cards are 11b and the newer ones built in are 11g could this be the reason or should they still detect them anyway. I notice the network which i created on the desktop pc (dink 11b pc card) only offers wep security, again is wpa a feature of 11g? The networks in the neighbourhood are wpa secured (i don't want to connect, just curious why the dink cards aren't detecting them) could this be why they are not picking them up. The reason i ask all this is i have bought a netgear 11g wireless router in preparation for getting ADSL internet and am wondering whether i need to look for new cards for the desktop and older laptop. thanks Gary Hi
802.11b cards can work together with 802.11g if they are configured with the same kevel of security or lack of. The Wireless security must be configured with the lowest level of encryption that is available on any of the cards. Example, you can have ten computers with 802.11g that can do WPA and one old computer with 802.11b that can do only WEP, and all computers need to be configured with the same WEP as the “Oldie”. May be this can further Help.
