link all the desktops together so we can use the applications that are on
just one mach

You can set all of them to do file sharing (http://www.ezlan.net/sharing).
You can not use application from one computer to the other, but you can
share data files and resources.
You can occitionaly use remote control program controling a second computer
and an application on it. It is not a constant working solution since it is
rather slow, and not very stable for such pupose.
