Two things you need to do - firstly, on both machines you need to set
folders you want to share, to be shared.
Secondly, you won't be able to connect the machines together with a regular
CAT5 cable - you need a crossover cable.

Adding to what Gordon stated, once physically connected together, you also
need to configure the NIC. Without a DHCP server you'll need to do
everything yourself. I would suggest that you enable ICS on the desktop
machine.

Jack (MVP-Networking).
Hi
Successful Sharing involves some general consideration in Network settings,
http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html
As well as specific adjustment of each computer according to what is allowed
to be shared.
